A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

    Leaking oil at head gasket

Great idea. I used grease for this one and it didn't work so well. I will be extremely careful this time.

1979 GS1000 idles fine but races when the throttle is twisted

I have a smoke generator and it is effective for tracking leaks.

    Leaking oil at head gasket

Well - the leak was coming from the head cover gasket. I traced the channel with a piece of wire and could see it from the top. There is a fold in the gasket. Poor install job. These H shaped gaskets are a pain in the butt to install. Live and learn.

    Leaking oil at head gasket

Just to confirm - there is an o-ring at this location? This seems to be where the oil is coming from. The Borescope didn't show much.

    Leaking oil at head gasket

I see the o-rings on the outside around the oil passages on the cylinder head gasket. Are you talking about the cover gasket?

    Leaking oil at head gasket

    Sorry - 1979 GS1000L.

    Leaking oil at head gasket

Well, thank you for the recommending a thorough check - I determined the the oil is coming from an air passage above the head gasket but below the head cover gasket. I can't think of any seals or gaskets in this area. It is hard to see in there but I will try. I am wondering if there is a crack...

1979 GS1000 idles fine but races when the throttle is twisted

Thank you for the advice - I will vac sync them.

1979 GS1000 idles fine but races when the throttle is twisted

I purchased new boots and they included new o-rings. I did a bench sync but haven'd done a vacuum sync yet. One thing I did notice is that the clamps for the air box boots are tightened right up and air may be leaking there. I will buy and install new clamps. I am also looking at the cables...

    Leaking oil at head gasket

Thank you. I am pretty sure it is coming from here but will double check. It was previously leaking from the tachometer gasket but I fixed it.

1979 GS1000 idles fine but races when the throttle is twisted

This is not helpful. I completely dismantled the carbs and replaced all o-rings and gaskets etc.

    Leaking oil at head gasket

I am pretty sure that I need to replace the head gasket but want to confirm. Today it started leaking oil at this location. Hard to believe that a bike with only 18,000 km needs a new head gasket.

1979 GS1000 idles fine but races when the throttle is twisted

I got the bike idling nicely today but when I twist the throttle it races and will not settle down. I can only reduce the idle by turning out the throttle screw but of course that closes the sliders and cannot start the bike without turning it back up. I slackened both sides of the throttle...

    Broken slide guide nib on - Carb #1 - 1979 GS1000L

Thank you Don. I was worried I might have had to buy a second set of carbs.

    Broken slide guide nib on - Carb #1 - 1979 GS1000L

As it turns out, it wasn't broken off but had somehow been pushed back. I pushed it back in with a round chisel and epoxied the hole. Hopefully it will not pop back out.

    Broken slide guide nib on - Carb #1 - 1979 GS1000L

No wonder the needle was damaged. It was flopping around in the cylinder. I am surprised that Mikuni would use plastic for the part. I have never seen on like this.

    Broken slide guide nib on - Carb #1 - 1979 GS1000L

I just noticed that the plastic nib that guides the slide on carb #1 is broken off. All the other nibs are intact. Is it possible to replace this part? It appears to be part of the carb body and I can't find it on the parts schematic.

1979 GS1000L Spark but not firing on Cylinders 3 and 4

I have completed a good number of the recommended newbie stuff including brakes, new rectifier/regulator, tank cleaning, petcock rebuild, new intake boots and o-ring, Rotella oil etc. I have the other type of Mikuni carbs and not the CV type. I installed new coils as well. I didn't do the full...
