As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

    First Bike - GS650G - Rusty Crusty

Here are a few more pics. The more I borescope, the sadder I get. By the way the light is reflecting off the imperfections, it's really looking like a gouge along the ring circumference. The slight vertical scratching doesn't seem to have moved the dark ring, so in my eyes, it's not soot/carbon...

I hope you're right! However this 'stuck valve' is still keeping the motor from cranking fully around... The valve isn't lifting fully, or seating fully when the cam lobe interacts. Gave it a good soak in PB blaster, and Marvel Mystery Oil to no avail. I'm a bit inexperienced on things like a...

    First Bike - GS650G - Rusty Crusty

I couldn't get a great view of the valve, but it did have a fair amount of soot on it. When using the borescope, I noticed the cylinder wall having some odd markings that sure don't look good. It's either an oil/soot line, or a crack...

Ah, yes you're right. I see in other ebay listings for 550 heads, that they also have this sleeve. Hopefully that can be easily sourced, as the threads are totally gone inside. Know of any reliable methods on fixing a stuck valve? Seems like in my case, the valve is stuck up, as the cam lobe is...

Valve cover was removed, and it looks like we've got a stuck valve. What's the best remedy for this? A marvel mystery oil soak? Unfortunately some of the head threads have been stripped out by the valve cover bolts as well. Some can probably be retapped/cleaned up, but one set of threads is...

I was mistaken about the engine rolling fully when in gear. It stops rotating regardless of being in Neutral or in gear... The kick starter does rotate the engine now, but still not a full rotation. I'll start on removing the valve cover. Not a great start, seeing one valve cover bolt already...

Yeah a stuck valve definitely came to mind... The pistons seem to go through a full rotation cycle, so I don't think something is stuck in the combustion chamber

    First Bike - GS650G - Rusty Crusty

I've got the engine nearly freed up, but it seems like something is holding up the 550 in the rotation. I'm using a wrench on the crank, and can cycle the bolt ~720* in both directions before hitting something firm. Anyone have an idea of what could be holding this up? Hopefully I don't need to...

Thanks! The 550 was certainly a score. What's the consensus on the Mikuni CV's vs VM's? Is it advisable to replace my VM's on the 550, since they'll probably need a rebuild regardless? Looks like used CVs can be purchased for around $100. Is there a preferred battery type on the GS? Unsealed...

    First Bike - GS650G - Rusty Crusty

I was holding off on tinkering with the GS650G until I got the title, which was successful last week! I printed out new emissions labels, as well as a matching VIN, clearcoated them, and spray glued them to the frame. Fortunately for me, I was able to leave the bike in the back of my VW Rabbit...

Thanks for the tip. I do have AAA so I'll give them a call tomorrow and see if they are able to register/title a bike that's out of the system

    First Bike - GS650G - Rusty Crusty

I'm torn if I should mock up a 'dealership' vin , and clearcoat/glue it onto the frame, or roll the dice and hope the DMV approves my OEM VIN sticker that shows the last 5 digits... Today I spent some time on the carbs, soda-blastin' the exteriors, and working on the un-ganging of the four...

    First Bike - GS650G - Rusty Crusty

Ah! You're right! I looked at it originally, but didn't double-check the inner fender. Sounds like now I've almost got everything needed to get this thing titled. Now I just need to hope that my VIN Sticker on the headtube is legible enough to count. The last 5 or so digits are stamped onto the...

    First Bike - GS650G - Rusty Crusty

I'm not seeing anything under the seat, or on the frame below the seat unfortunately... Do you have a picture of an emission sticker for this era? Can't seem to find anything on an image search. Also, I got your carb o-ring kit today. Thanks!

    First Bike - GS650G - Rusty Crusty

Whelp, I'm still struggling with gettin' this title transferred over... Perhaps one of y'all can help me out. The DMV has lost all record of this bike, so I've got to create a whole new file. This requires 2 x VINs, engine number, and 'emission sticker'. The main VIN stamped on the headtube is...

    First Bike - GS650G - Rusty Crusty

That was an informative read! I'll be contacting Nessim for a kit. I haven't had much time to dig into the 650G, but the carburetor is next on the list... Forum member Charlie G recently provided me with heaps of replacement 650G parts! Forks, wheels, gaskets, final drive, fenders, electrical...

    First Bike - GS650G - Rusty Crusty

Had a little time with the bike today, removing the carburetors, UNI air filter, and diagnosing the starter switch. The continuity wasn't reading on the switch, so I disassembled it and cleaned the contacts. Viola, she cranks. Question about carburetor rebuild kits - is OEM a significant bump...

Yes, I know...but it's good to use on clean contacts in my (limited) experience. I've got some steel pipe cleaners that should work on cleaning these connectors

That makes sense! I'll dig up my dielectric grease and start testing, the next chance I get. I appreciate y'alls help!
