    1980 GS850L Cafe Racer 4 Sale

I hate to let it go, but the time has come. It's a fun bike and in great running condition. Modified front brakes (Honda F4 rotors and Kawasaki EX650 calipers), Vance and Hines 4 to 1 exhaust, custom seat, new top end gaskets from the base up. Mechanically sound and sounds great! This one...

    Cylinder base gasket replacement

Understood. My biggest concern was finding a mechanic that knew these bikes. Knowing his history, I doubt the guy even cracked open the manual. He's like us, old school. Every time I talk to him he tells me me about performance tricks he's learned over the years. I keep insisting he writes a...

    Cylinder base gasket replacement

He charges $115 per hour. The work was split into about 4 days ( he's a full time caretaker for his wife battling stage 4 cancer) and he was completely transparent with the entire process. He insisted I stop by each day if possible to inspect the work. He treated my bike like it was his own...

    Cylinder base gasket replacement

I'm blessed to have a mechanic in town who is a former drag racer/mechanic from the 80s. His knowledge is incredibly valuable when it comes to bikes of this era. He did the work, including planing surfaces to insure flatness. The entire job was done for about $1k. For him, it was a labor of...

    Cylinder base gasket replacement

Deep dive this morning. Definitely the cylinder base gasket. I'm a little surprised how it went from fine to Watching it form a puddle in no time with the engine running. Ordering a gasket kit today.

    Cylinder base gasket replacement

I'll be investigating tonight, but the leak may be coming from the cam tension adjustment gasket. That would explain a puddle on top of the case. I tried to download the Bike Cliff's manual with no luck.... stupid computer. Anyone know what's involved in removing the cam tension adjuster if that...

Twinpot Brake upgrade on 78 Skunk

I'll be sending the final bracket file soon. Our management just went into beast mode on a project, so hopefully I'll send in a day or so. I took the bike out for a proper test yesterday and brakes are great! No more Fred Flintstone emergency stops.

Twinpot Brake upgrade on 78 Skunk

Welp, I finally got it all figured out and my brakes are phenomenal compared to what they were. Having the "L" model made the install a bit more challenging due to having to fabricate the caliper mount brackets. Walking in on this project, I knew it was going to be challenging for my lack of...

    Cylinder base gasket replacement

Rich, you're making a really good point. Stop making sense. It's getting expensive...LoL.

    Cylinder base gasket replacement

Seinwave, thank you for the detailed comment. Lots to consider there. I previously had a leaking oil pan gasket that I'm replacing as soon as it arrives. Once that's done, I'll deep clean the motor, use the powder foot spray Rich suggests, and examine the area you suspect as well. I did look...

    Cylinder base gasket replacement

Got it, thanks. I was told 27 ft-lbs. I don't have a manual, so does that sound about right?

    Cylinder base gasket replacement

Thanks Grimly. So you're saying the 4 exposed nuts close to the spark plugs are all? I do have a bit of research to do to verify the leak, but the only place I'm seeing it is on the bottom left rear side of the head and base. Seems to only leak when the bike is under power. Like I said, more...

    Cylinder base gasket replacement

I'll definitely try that too. Foot spray is much cheaper than the alternative.????

    Cylinder base gasket replacement

Excellent advice! Thanks. A mechanic friend suggested the same thing but said to remove the valve cover to access the other head studs as well. It would be great if that solves it.

    Cylinder base gasket replacement

Out riding with the wife in the country. I looked down and saw a small puddle of oil forming on the motor behind the head (left side). Looks like I'm going to need to install a new cylinder base gasket.....uuuugh.... X I feel this level of work is beyond my mechanical skill set. Anyone know if a...

    Fairing For Sale

Yes, it does. There's really not much to it. It's two brackets coming from the headlight mount screws.
