    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

1980 GS550 Front brake question

I just picked up a 1980 GS550 not sure of the last letter but In looks just like my old 80 GS1000G. Anyway my questions is....What years will the brake assembly interchange? (ie 78-82 ect ect?) In other words it is missing the entire front brake assembly, no caliper, hose or master. Im on ebay looking for one but want to make sure to get it right the first time. Any help will be greatly apreciated!!

Unfortunately these parts were only used on the '80 model 550 and 1000. So you will need to measure the distance between the mounting lug holes on your fork sliders and ask plenty of questions to Ebay sellers to make sure the parts will fit. Any 5/8 master cylinder will work for twin discs on your bike, but must be for 7/8" bars. Buy new brake lines, don't go "used", preferably stainless lines. Does your bike have single or twin discs?

Thanks but Im not looking to find out where to get parts but more like what year front calipers will bold up on my forks. I dont know if they didnt make a one off fork for 1980 GS550. From that site i did see there are only a choise between 550E or 550L and I know for a fact its not an L.
So what year front calipers interchange onto my 1980 GS550e?

Please don't expect to buy a bunch of 30 year old used brake system parts and then just slap them on your bike. Expect to perform a full tear down, clean out, and replace the old rubber lines which are sure to be deteriorated by now.
 
Yea I plan on rebuilding the master and caliper.. and new line..

Ed he doesn't have any brake lines. I've suggested to him he buy or make stainles/teflon ones.
 
The caliper for your year ('80) is unique to that year as I said before.

Having said that the front forks that are on your bike are the same as the following models so there is no reason why the calipers off these models would not fit. Of course the other thing to check is whether your caliper is on the left or right fork leg, as the calipers are handed.

Okay guys. I feel better now. Been hanging out here too long I guess...reading how some people throw away their old brakes and slam on ebay parts straight out of the box.:eek:

Im new here but not to motorcycles. You never know what kind of junk you get off ebay but if im rebuilding anyway I might as well start off with cheap parts off ebay...

Is your disc/caliper on the left or right?
 
Have you had a look in the FOR SALE Section of this site? Some members here might have some parts for sale or be parting out a bike.

BTW when buying a caliper be aware that the calipers for single disc and dual disc are different. The disks on the dual disk models are smaller than the single disk models. So when buying calipers on Ebay ask lots of questions in relation to the distance between bolt holes on caliper hangers.
