    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

1980 GS550 Fuel in Exhaust

My 80 Gs550 just started leaking gas out the bottom where the two exhaust meet. I thought it was possibly a stuck float, did the screw driver trick, but got no results. I now assume it is the petcock. I can see gas going down the tube going into carb #2 while the bike is running. I'm assuming this is flooding the cylinder and thats why there is gas in my exhaust. Anyone else have this problem? Any help is appreciated. Thanks alot!
 
How difficult is it to replace the petcock? Do i just pull the tank, unbolt it and reconnect the fuel lines? Thanks for your quick response. This site is awesome!
 
Changing the petcock is a minor task in the grand scheme. Easier for example than performing a valve adjustment, which I certainly hope you are performing.
 
If you've had fuel running through to the exhaust system, you will want to change your oil, because some fuel (often lots!) will have seeped past the piston rings and into the sump. This is not good for the oil's lubrication qualities, overfills your sump, and creates explosive vapours in your crankcase... :eek:

There should not be a hose running just to carb #2. The gas feed line goes to a "T" between carbs 2 and 3.

The only hose that goes from the petcock to #2 is the VACUUM line that turns on the petcock.

If/when you replace the petcock, follow a few simple guidelines:
Get an exact replacement (OEM) with the vacuum fitting. It will work another 30 years, so amortize the expense over that time period.
Get all the gaskets/o-rings that go with it and replace them at the same time. The 30 year time period applies here as well.

A friend of mine has an 83 gs750 and he has an extra petcock. Would this one fit or is it not interchangeable?
