    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

1980 GSX 1100 wont start when hot!

The problem is that when my bikes engine gets hot (after 10-15 mins driving), it wont crank fast enough to start the engine. It starts really easily when I start the engine by pushing the bike and after 20-30 mins cooling it starts by its own. When the motor is cold it cranks like hell and the motor always starts instantly. The battery, starter solenoid, RR unit and charger are all renewed. The voltage is high enough. The colder the weather is, more crappily it cranks...

I have a Wiseco 1166 -piston kit installed on the bike so I suppose there is more pressure in the cylinders than in stock engines. Could I suppose that the engine is "tighter" than stock engine and thats the reason it wont crank when hot (because when its hotter it?s even tighter?). What can be done about it - would a bigger battery help or a new starter motor. What do you pros suggest???

I have just removed the starter motor and i think I?ll open it tonight for first aid - what should I do about it when I open it; clean it (with what?) and grease it (with what?). What about the brushes???

Help help!!!

Does your bike have points or electronic ignition? If it is equipped with the points, there is a good chance that the your ignition timing may be too far advanced. This is just a thought...

I have no idea :shock: -how do I find out is the ignition or electronic does it have points? Could this timing problem be tested by driving the motor warm, taking the spark plug wires loose and trying to start; if it cranks better than when the wires are connected, the timing is wrong? :?

Does someone know where (From EU) to order brushes for my starter via email (Nippondenso 31100-49210). Is there a specialist somewhere in europe for electric parts or GS/GSX parts? Recommends?

Or rapaired starter motors?
 
The points should be under the the right side cover on the engine case...I think there are three screws to remove and you'll find it there. As for the exact timing on your bike, it would be best to look in the book for this or email Keith mailto:keith.krause@comcast.net , it seems as though he has a good handlel on these bikes when it comes to the finer details.

I know from experience that when an engine starts great when cold and will barely turn over when hot but starts when you push it and drop the clutch, the first place I'd look would be the timing...if too far advanced, it will spin it to the first piston on the compression stroke and almost lock up there. Also, if you listen close and the pipes aren't too loud, you should hear it "ping" or have a preignition resonance when you run it under heavy loads ie.(4th-5th gear at low rpms...2500-4000).
 
If it's an 80 it doesn't have points. Sounds like a battery or starter to me.
 
Did you or a previous owner fit the Wiseco pistons. I'm wondering if the rings have been gapped to closely and that the extra expansion when hot may be causing the motor to run too tight. When you let it cool down, the clearance increases enough to allow the starter to operate under normal load conditions.
Just a thought.
