Fellas, I have a 1981 GS1100EX that had a big bore kit installed, and has been sitting up for about 8 years with out running. I pulled the engine and soda blasted it, and am thinking that this would be a good time to replace the complete gasket set.
The engine is currently out of the frame after being soda blasted.
Trouble is, I don't recall the big bore piston kit, so the question becomes how to determine the piston and dowel size for something like the Cometic MLS.
From Cometic website: "...Multi-Layer Steel. MLS head gaskets are comprised of three or five layers of stainless spring steel. The outer layers are an embossed Viton coated stainless steel providing a superior seal with excellent rebound characteristics and are corrosive resistant..."
Could the heads be unbolted and a spacer used to pull the cam chain tight and get in to measure the diameter of the bores?
Also the question arises as to determination of the dowels.
I am in San Antonio, Texas and am an Electronics Tech, not a mechanic.
A local shop quoted 8 hours labor for the installation of a complete gasket set (cylinder head cover, cylinder head, breather cover, cylinder base, tensioner, clutch cover, exhaust, generator, oil pan, contact breaker gaskets) plus the oil seals/rings, o-ring cylinder head, cylinder base.
I suppose that the mechanic can pull it apart the let me know if all else fails.
