DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hello Everyone.
New member. Looking to do a complete rebuild on a 1983 GS400E that has been sitting for 20 years in one spot. Flat tires and all. Gas and carbs drained. Considering converting it into something fun like a cafe racer. Does anyone recommend any parts to use since it will be completely torn down. Like a new cam, valves, pistons, springs, bars, etc....lets have fun with this. Thanks everyone!

2 valve or 4 valve motor? There's a bunch of options with the 2 valve motor as far as mixing and matching parts from the GR650 and GS500 to get a big bore motor......not too sure if you have the same scope with the 4 valve motor though.

These bikes are famous for just changing the oil, plugs, and battery on a rusty old hulk and they fire right up. Keep that in mind (and your bank account in reference to how little the bike is worth) as you tinker.

It is the GS400ED model. Right now the wheels are seized, probably the brakes. Really not sure if its a 2 or 4 valve.

The cam end caps will tell you what the engine is - round caps are the 2 valve, rectangular are the 4 valve:

Sorry to high jack your thread but while we're talking about 2/4 valve 400s, what parts are interchangeable? I've got a 4valve and find it extremely hard to fine my bike listed anywhere.

Well firstly Welcome Aboard!!!!
Here's some info I highly recommend reading through before starting any big project.
Find your manual and get versed my brother in GSR!

I say restore. The 83 GS400E is a cool looking bike! Keep it stock. I have seen so many cafe's flop or look horrid.

Should post some pics of the bike too!!! I Love seeing another twin GS rider join!

Good luck!
