A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

1984 GSX550ES project

Forum Newbie
This is my build thread for my 1984 Suzuki GSX550ES. I paid $550 for it, and it shows, the tank was rusted beyond fixing, missing blinkers, bad brakes, questionable… everything. But it was cheap, and it’s my first full street motorcycle.

i started by getting it home and taking all the fairings off to see what all it needed, definitely a battery, turn signals, fuel tank, petcock and sender unit(can’t find those, but I did find a tank for it) and at least the carbs gone through

I did put a new tank on it the other day, fix some of the plastics mounting points being broken, put turn signals on the rear, new battery, but it still needs brakes, carb work, and a sender unit(I don’t know what to do about this..)

As I do work on it, I’ll post pictures on here as I go, and hopefully get some much needed help from you guys on here as I’m sure I’ll need it

Welcome! Good luck with the project. We like photos here.

For anyone who has these 83-87 dual carb bike, what is the go to for replacing them? Just find them used? My are total junk, rusted out completely, which explains the tank as well…

Just now reading Cycle World's road test of the all new GS550ES in the September 1983 issue. So far, it's "deceptively fast" and everything seems to be proper. I'll let you know how the story ends.

So the carbs are complete junk, not able to be brought back, I guess years of sitting with ethanol gas and seemingly water ruined them, what does everyone suggest I do besides just buying mystery carbs off eBay that are probably also junk, is there any permanent solution at all or no?

You have a slight chance of getting junk. Ask seller for pics with bowls off if not in listing.
I have 3 sets 2 from eBay were perfect less the 40 yr old rubber
diaphragms perfect too.

the current listings are madly overpriced, its easier and cheaper to set up a notification and brood malevolently over winter.
