DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

I have a 1980 GS550 engine that I've begun to build a bike around...before I get to far along...I'd like to make sure I do in fact have an electronic ignition system and not points system-
It is electric start only if that helps...b/c I'm only 99 % sure its a 1980.
Thanks all

There were several changes that mark the difference between '79 and '80:
They lost the kick starter.
They went from points to electronic ignition.
They went from VM carbs to BS carbs.

Other details, I'm sure, but those were three very noticeable items.

Another way to tell is to look at the VIN on the steering stem. Not only will it give you the date of manufacture, there will be a letter after the serial number. If it is "N", it's a 79. If it's "X", it's an '80. Be aware that the first of the '80 models were made in late '79, so your '80 model might have been made as early as about 9/79. :D

EDIT: Looking at your post again, it appears that you might not have a frame. In that case, remove the cover off the right end of the crank to see if you have points or signal generators.

.

Thanks

Thanks

Yeah I def. do not have a kick start on the bike-
The title appears to state the motor from 1980-
Thanks-I double check behind the cover tonight!

Just pointing out that only US and Canadian models went to electronic in 1980...

Europe and elsewhere didn't change from points until 1981 with the EZ.. other changes like kickstart, carbs, headstock bearings, etc happened in 1980

I think it was something to do with emissions.. as you lot also got tamperproof airscrews, which we didn't..
Although saying that, it isn't hard to remove the metal seal so you can get to them.
