    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

5W40 Rotella in a 10w40 engine?

Here's an oil question. After reading through all of the oil-related threads I could find, I've got one question left before giving this stuff a try. I'm currently running Mobile1 MX4T 10W40 synthetic in my '82 GS750E. Thats what the guy before me used for years, so thats what is in it now. As I prepare to do an oil change I'm looking for a good alternative, as this is getting hard to find and is $8-$10 a quart. So, I'm thinking of using the 5W40 Rotella that so many here use.

What issues/risks/concerns should I have about using a 5W40 in place of a 10W40?

Thanks in advance. And this is not meant to be a massive oil battle thread. I hope it doesn't turn into that...I don't have time to read another LONG thread. :D

It will spin the engine faster and start easier in extreme cold. Other than that, it should perform about the same as the Mobil.

That's what I use in my Goldwing and that's what is going into the GS650L that I just got done putting rod and main bearings in.
 
Should make no difference on your bike. It's happy as long as the oil is fresh and clean, the filter has been replaced recently, and you ride the he!! out of it often.

Trust the GS -- it's a tough old bird, demanding little and giving lots.
