A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I bit off way more than I can chew with this bike. I had hoped to have a project to learn on, but honestly I have no one to teach me and I don't even know what questions to ask. I do know however that upon trying to start it with a screwdriver across the starter relay, I did something that caused everything to go dead. I had assumed it was just a blown fuse somewhere, but I can't even find a fuse box. There are spliced wires everywhere and the PO had been using an alligator clip to hold the negative lead to the battery. It's in rough shape (electrically).

My question is: Should I hit up eBay and spring for a used harness? Is there a complete idiot's guide to connecting everything back up? Will other model year harnesses work? If so, which? Does anyone on this forum or elsewhere make snazzy new harnesses?

It's a 1978 GS750E. Also, the starter switch is mostly gone and dash is gone. Half tempted to roll this into the lake.

You could try and get a used harness off eBay, first I would post a want add in the wanted section. Someone on here may have one.

I feel your pain. I have an electrical issue with my newly acquired 1100 and have been noodling on the best/satisfactory/any approach to ident the fault on mine.

Yup, I've even pondered pulling the whole harness, unwrapping it and begin a non-systematic, systematic exercise in tracing things using a meter to check continuity to start.

You're going to need a multi meter also known as a VOM (Volt Ohm Meter)if you don't have one. You can get a cheap analog meter at Hazard Fraught or as they call it Harbor Freight. I suggest you invest more and get a good digital like a Fluke which is what I have and use quite a bit. Look of one that has a bag/case or method of hanging it on something while using it.

Yes, as I sit here with a nice glass of Chardonnay, I beginning to wonder where I'm going with this post and just what benefit it might provide to you.... (Hmmm, if I can't solve my problem, what makes me thing I can solve yours?)

.... Is there room in that lake for two bikes?
