DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hello. I just purchased this bike and tried the kickstart yesterday. It doesn't turn the motor over. What could I possibly be doing wrong?

Thanks.

Rick

Does the electric starter work? Is their any resistance with the
kick starter Need more info

Re: "79 gs850 kick start

Do you have the bike in neutral or the clutch lever pulled it? You cant kickstart it if its in gear.

Electric works. I was just trying the kick start. There doesn't seem to be much resistance at all.

Thanks.

Rick

There isnt much resistance on a 4 cylinder. On my 79 750, I could "kickstart" it while sitting on it by reaching down with my right hand and pushing the kickstart lever through. :-)

Yes, clutch lever pulled, key on, green light for neutral. I don't get any putts when I kick it.

This is normal? Probably never was used. I think it is a great standby, but not when or if it doesn't work.....

Thanks.

Rick

It is necessary to pull the clutch in ONLY when using the electric starter because their is a saftey switch located on the clutch lever that completes the starter circuit.
The kick start turns the motor over thru the trans & clutch, if you pull the clutch in it disconnects the kick start

Now there is something I didn't know.
Thanks Lynn 8)

Ditto. Thanks guys. If I get the canoe out and float over to my shed, I'll try it with the clutch out. I'm sure it will work, since I was pulling it in.

Appreciate the info. I'm sure I'll be probing the knowledge base often while I'm getting this bike ready to ride.

hey
i just picked up a 550 for a project. it needs gone through but my bike also wont turn the motor with the kick start. I have no idea why that would be.

You'll have a much improved chance for some help if you start your own post.
Preferably one just to introduce yourself to the collective with your location also posted. ;)
Re-opening a long since buried post doesn't help.
