A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

'81 650G - Dumb questions for my new ride :)

Well, thanks mostly to MissFab's help, there's now an '81 650G sitting in my (freezing) garage! I've had only a little daylight to look it over, and sit on it and run it for a bit. It's going to need some work over the winter to be sure (I need to pull the fairing off and get a headlight & front turn signals for one thing).

However, I just wanted to ask about a couple other things to find out if they're quirks, or normal, or something to actually worry about (And I'll have more questions later, with photos, when I can shoot one in bright light). Keep in mind this is my first bike, so I'm pretty much an idiot :)

1) When I kill the engine, the oil light comes on. Is this normal? Just checkin'. :) It hasn't come on when the engine is running.

2) The electrical output seems... unsteady sometimes..? The lighted instruments seem to sort of fluctuate at idle, and when the brake light comes on or I switch to high beam, everything dims a bit. Is that normal?

3) The instrument cluster's lighted gear indicator has 6 gears..! Obviously the GS has only 5, but does that mean that the 6-position gear indicator just a stock part, or is it the wrong part?

4) At idle, just sitting there and not riding (since my helmet hasn't arrived yet and I'm still waiting for my MSF course paperwork to get my official license anyway), I can shift cleanly through the gears, but it's sort of hard to find neutral sometimes. Is that a symptom of anything..?

...That's all I can think of for now--thanks in advance for any advice!

Normal...should also come on when starting the bike.

2) The electrical output seems... unsteady sometimes..? The lighted instruments seem to sort of fluctuate at idle, and when the brake light comes on or I switch to high beam, everything dims a bit. Is that normal?

Its a Suzuki...should clean ALL electrical connections and check "Stator Papers" for proper charging.

3) The instrument cluster's lighted gear indicator has 6 gears..! Obviously the GS has only 5, but does that mean that the 6-position gear indicator just a stock part, or is it the wrong part?

Stock part...some GS's have 6 gears.

Make sure you have fresh clean oil...finding gears will be easier when moving.

yep, good response there. Sounds like my bike all around. As to the charging and the stator papers, it's definitely worth going thru the bike, cleaning connections, checking on voltages, but mine dims the light with a flasher on, brightens up when you rev the engine, etc, but it still has held it's charge well enough for nearly four years now. I did all the paper called for and everything checked out. depending on the age and use(or lack thereof), a new battery might be in order just in case...

My lights are dimmer at idle, and the headlight dims (blinks) as the turn signal flashes. This is normal. I have a new battery, new R/R, and a new wiring harness.

On my 850 I had a problem idle speeds lights would dim when brakes were applied. Was caused by high resistance in the ign switch
