A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I have charged the battery, it is new, and tried using jumper leads across the solenoid terminals and the starter does not turn. The solenoid clicks when starter button pushed. Starter motor must be stuffed?

it starts to look that way.

You can remove the starter motor cover, connect the negative jumper lead to the chassis or negative battery terminal, and tap the connection on the starter motor with the positive jumper lead to be sure.

If the starter motor does nothing, you could whack the starter motor with a wooden hammer a few times, sometimes the carbon brushes are fouled and start working.

If all that fails, the started motor needs to be checked.
It can be cleaned and overhauled.

At this point, I would remove left side stator cover to check that nothing is jammed up in starter drive system..this would let you remove small idler gear and see if starter motor could now spin. Try tapping motor to wake it up!
Removing starter motor is nasty business, as carbs and camchain tensioner need to come off first. The shafty 650's share starter motors with the gs450 and 300 models (at least in usa versions)

Have removed the starter motor and it will not turn, by hand or with the battery, anyone rebuilt one?

If it is really stuck, I'd look for replacement. A competent auto place can replace bearings, brushes, turn commutator, etc. but sometimes these things are beat.

agreed with Tom, if it's stuck you may need a replacement.
They are not hard to take apart and clean, so if you want to check
why it is not turning here's a nice movie from Rick's Motorsport Electrics.

Pulled the starter out and the problem was two of the magnets had come loose, one has broken up and seized the motor. Managed to get a second hand one from a GS650E but needed to change the mounting, not sure which way the motor should be running as it is going the wrong way and will not turn the engine over.

Holding the starter motor shaft facing you, the motor turns counterclockwise when the motor case is grounded and positive 12 volts is applied to terminal.

Must have put the armature in the wrong way round after dismantling it to check everything over and change the mounting, need to turn it around.
