Hello everyone!! After being done with motorcycles for a couple of years, I came across this 82 GS 450L. It was cheap, but complete. I knew it was having electrical issues, but I also read enough on this site to know I was looking at probable stator/rectifier problems. I did buy both parts off EBay. I figured screw it, it's all plug and play. I was wrong. The new stator has 3yellow wires and 1black(guessing ground). My new rectifier has 3 yellow wires 1 black 1 red . Any ideas??? My old one had 1red 1 white with blue 1 yellow. Stuck and don't dare just hook up for smoke!!

Recap: OLD Rectifier--1 Red,1 white w/Blue Stripe,1 Yellow 1Black

NEW Rectifier 3-Yellow , 1Red, 1Black
NEW Stator 3-Yellow,, 1 Black, 1Red(?)

forget the old one....three yellow to three yellow. your correct the black is the ground. the red from the rectifier is the hot into the motorcycle, everthing goes from there you should have a wiring diagram off of http://members.dslextreme.com/users/bikecliff/ that would help tremendously. your actually going to be taking out an unnecessary and problematic loop with this upgrade. oh, the black from rectifier goes to ground of battery I believe, but don't quote me. it's been a year since i did that.

lemme go look at mine and ill tell ya what i see. check out bikecliff's site though, tons of info

now that I rethink myself....yeah I only have 3 yellow coming out of that stator....you sure you got the right one?

The new one has 3 yellow that's it. I am looking at it now.

I can't see that wiring diagram really well on my IPod. 3 Yellow to 3 Yellow. Red from the rectifier to Red on the bike.

What about the white with blue and the white with red stripe?

Hey buddy!! Long time no talk! This is actually my third GS. My last 82 850G was parted out on here a while ago. I DID read the stator papers before I bought parts. Mine was getting so hot it about melted wires, I checked grounds, cleaned and put new connectors one the nasty ones.

Where is the wiring part that shows me where or what wires I connect from the rectifier to the bike though.....

Hi,

I have never seen a stator for our GS bike that had more than 3 wires. The r/r units should have 5 or 6. If they have extra grounds or hot wires they can have 7 or 8. But the most common r/r units should have 6; 3 stator connections, 1 hot, 1 ground, and 1 sense wire.

Thanks BikeCliff! I knew you'd hop in here. Listen to this guy FEFD17 it's because of him my bike and probably many others run so well. To answer your question about those wires if you didn't pick it up in the papers, those wires are different colors so that you would one day ask us why. This is the only reason anyone can figure.

Update, I installed the new rectifier and stator. I cleaned the grounds and replaced or cleaned the connectors.I heat shrinked all the splices. I have another issue. I went to replace the stator cover and I found 2 dowels. I know the one goes in at the 10 oclock position. I have another smaller one that is just large enough to go over the bolts but i cannot find/see where it came from. it wont fit in any of the bolt holes, any ideas?? I am soooo close to having this together!!!!

I am really frustrated with the damn left headlight/turn switch too,but I will either replace it or band aid the one I have after.

BTW is the headlight a 7"?? I found one on J.C. Whitney for $30.00 .

The other dowel is at very bottom, but it doesn't have a bolt pass thru it! It is in the bumpout in stator cover bottom.
I hoped you did bypass the headlight switch - reread Basscliff's tutorial, unless you plan to run with headligh off.

I just realized I gotta get a gasket first, before I can put it back together. I still cannot see the hole where the small dowel goes though. I hope it's something I can spot when I get the new stator cover gasket.

The headlight switch was broke when I got the bike and trying to find a decent used one is like trying to find rocking horse poop.

The new r/r has 3 yellow 1 red and 1 black that's it. I read and used the schematic and wired the yellow to yellow red to red and black is going to battery ground.
