I recently bought an '82 GS1100GLZ 17,500 miles. I put in a new battery(1 yr old one in bike was toast) got it running and found it was not charging. I tested the stator per the Chilton's manual which said all three legs should read above 74 volts mine read 90+. I replaced the voltage regulator with a new Rick's universal replacement. After this, the battery was charging at 16.5 volts from just above idle , checked with 2 different voltmeters. Can anyone shed some light? I don't want to boil batteries up. Now ,I did find in the manual in the back ,updates for 82 on bikes. Which stated that 82 up models had different internals in the voltage regulator, but the one I got was exactly the same as the one in it except the replacement did not have a "factory" type plug, so I spliced it in.
