DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hey Everyone,

I have an 83 gs550es with ~25000 miles. The motor is out and the case is split. I left the upper end in tact as the engine runs. I started this project to fix my false neutral 3rd and 6th gear. I found the 6th gear driven has broken dogs(side teeth that engage the next gear over). Hopefully "dogs" is the proper term. The next gear over is the 3rd gear driven. So that answers my questions to why now i need to find part. I found gear at alpha-sports for $100 but also found a used 85 whole transmission for ~$50. The part numbers from alpha-sports are off by the last number for the 83 and the 85 part.
So would you buy this part used and should the 85 part fit my 83? I think it should but assumptions and me dont get along;)

Oh, and since I am this far into this project is there any thing else that you would do if this were your bike before it gets put back together. for maintenance or performance.

Thanks all
Gerb

The number is different due to the number of teeth being different.
Or the early one was replaced by an updated part number.
Teeth caount is the same so it is likely the latter.
They show as unavailable in any event so your choice is clear.
My numbers are taken from both model years of the same model designation.

hey jeeprusty,
thanks, i was hoping it was just a simple part replacement on suzuki's end. the part # needed is 24361-43401. I was able to find it for about 70 from other stores, thats just for the gear. I think I may tempt fate with a whole trans from ebay.
Any other ideas about things that need to be done while at this stage of the project would be greatly appreciated.
thanks again
Gerb
