    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I rebuilt a 1980 GS850g for my wife a few years back and during the rebuilding stage I installed pods, 4 into 1 exhaust and Dyno jet stage 3 kit. I bought Emgo pods VS. the recomended K&N filters. They were $28 VS. $175--a no brainer right? Well the bike ran great except top end, it was to rich. I kept dropping main jets until i finally said something ain't right, Dyno-Jet is never this far off in thier specs. After syncing and adjusting and readjusting I finally concluded it MUST be the filters. I finally ponied up the coin for the K&N filters and when comparing them to the Emgos the internal opening was 14MM SMALLER on the Emgo filter!!!!!!!!!! Wonder why it laid down on the top end?????????? Installed the K&N filters tonight with the 160 Dyno-Jet mains and will test drive this weekend ( to many barley-pops tonight to drive a bike )

How do you mean "internal opening was 14mm smaller"?? I'm confused because if they fit on your carb, how could the opening be smaller than the K&N's??
 
The opening to fit on the carb was the same, when you look inside the filter the Emgo was necked down right after the mounting flange 7mm per side!!! The K&N was not. It was like putting a restrictor plate on the carb.
 
Oh, so the rubber like funneled down to a smaller diameter?

I've always read here that the Dynojet kit was designed for the K&N pod filters. Thanks for confirming this once again. Let us know how well it runs.

I got a set of pod filters off of ebay, they are the cone style and have the wire mesh and the foam filter element... They don't funnel down like you are saying your emgo's do... In fact they look pretty damn good all over. I am thinking they are K&N knock-offs.

K&N's don't use foam...they use gauze.

K&N knock offs/offset ovals(not cones) can be had brand new for 60ish bucks.
don't oil or wash these.
ive only posted 100 times about the emgo's being trash and not being able to be tuned on a 4 cyl. GS.
you get what you pay for.
 
Nevermind that... I paid 35 shipped for all 4 filters and they are in fact cotton-gauze which is wrapped in a stainless steel wire mesh.
 
Got a chance to ride the 850 tonight. This thing FINALLY pulls all the way to redline. Runs, idles and goes smoooooooth!
I am always amazed each spring at how nice a bike the 850G is to ride. Smooth, enough power for most, easy to ride, truely a great everyday bike.
My wife used to have an FZR400, mint shape, as her primary ride and after I brought this 850G home and puffed it up, that 400 never got rode again.

if the throats where they clamp on the carbs will pop off the cone(chrome area) itself...
then you bought a set of emgo's.
dealer is 4 or 6 bucks a piece on these.
35.00 to the door sounds about right.
there's not that many filters out there available in this price range.

Does not appear that the rubber "pops off". There is a lip on the inside of the rubber... I'll measure and if this actually does restrict the opening to the carb, then I'll just go in with an exacto-knife and carve it up.

The boxes they come in have a big W on them and the top of the filter on the chrome crap has the big W too... and they are made in vachina too. Overall they look pretty decent for chinese crap though.

The bike is running decent with the stock airbox and since it's running fine, I'm just gonna leave it be for right now. I'll get around to putting the pods on in the near future. I got new carb o-rings and engine side boot o-rings n stuff too.
 
thats them...
if you grab the clamp/rubber area they should pull away from the chrome body if you remove the clamp and compress the rubber into oval shape.
they will pop right back together with a little effort.
