If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Air Filter Box restricted?

Hi Everyone,
I am tinkering with my recently purchased 84 1150EF, trying to fix a few things to get a few more rides in before it's too cold...
I removed the air filter box to get to the battery ground and noticed how retrictive those 2 holes in it are that let the outside air in.
This must have been discussed before, but I cannot find them.
My first reaction is to take out the rubber grommets and open them up, or to just cut another big hole in the bottom??
There was a K&N in the box and the bike has a Yoshi exhaust..
Found a bad plug in #2, so maybe don't have to take the carbs off just yet, which sounds like a tricky job...
Cheers

Airbox?

Airbox?

Thanks for the advice, although it would seem that there is some easy horsepower to be found this way, as the motor can use more air if opening up the inlets will make it go lean,,
At this time I certainly do not need more hp, maybe when the clutch is fixed, but the other side is that there could be a mpg gain if the motor is not pulling against a restriction...
FI is great for this stuff as it self compensates, experience with turbo cars shows hp gains whenever "negative pressure" restrictions are eliminated in the intake side, which are usually pretty easy/cheap to do..
New plugs going in tomorrow, hopefully that gets it back on 4 cyls again.
Thanks again
Trevor

Everybody talks about how restrictive the air box is, but the thing to remember is that only one carb is actually operating at one time. You need to have the right dead air volume and the stock air box is designed for that.

Airflow

Airflow

You maybe correct, somewhat, about the very early FI systems, but these days they have very sensitive airflow measuring devices that tell the ecu how much air is going in, although the mapping must be a big part of it, especially at WOT.
I'm thinking that before cutting holes I will try running without, or maybe just spacing up, the cover over the filter.
My plugs did not look as if I am running lean, maybe the surging that I had sensed related to the plugs - hoping..
Cheers

Greetings and Salutations!!

Hi Mr. qcktvr,

Any modifications to the intake or exhaust on these bikes will require jetting changes to compensate for increased air flow and avoid a lean air/fuel mixture. You'll find info and links on my little website.

Your "mega-welcome" contains a couple of maintenance lists. Every item on these lists must be properly addressed in order to have a safe, reliable motorcycle. Skipping steps and taking shortcuts can cause severe death and injury, or at least terminal frustration. ;)

Thank you for your indulgence,

Comparing FI systems with CV carbs is like comparing pigs to jellyfish

THe CV carbs need the proper amount of restriction to run correctly. Too much air = not enough vacuum= Poor slide response

just for fun take it for a ride with the lid off the airbox and see how well it runs.
