Hey,

I'm looking to replace the air filter (stock) on my 1980 GS550L, which I think is the same filter used on a number of years for that model. I'm open for going with a stock filter from bikebandit or something, but was wondering if anyone had changed to an aftermarket filter with any success, and if so, what one? I don't want to do a replacement that requires rejetting or anything, but just a simple swap.

Thanks,

Tyler.
You're in luck. We have the same bike and I JUST replaced my stock air filter with a K&N replacement. Man do I have a story to tell!
First, it was GREAT!
My bike has an aftermarket MAC 4-1 exhaust and stock jetting. I made and installed a new foam seal to go under my air box cover and installed that along with the K&N filter. Then I adjusted my pilot air screws on the carbs and did a good vacuum sync. With the 4-1 exhaust, stock jets, and K&N filter she starts and idles beautifully and has great throttle response.

HOWEVER, it does run a tad bit leaner now, but this is great for me becaue I was running rich. Before the recent carb rebuild, vac sync, and filter change I was getting ~30 mpg. I'm not certain about the mileage yet because it's been so recent, but last night I topped off my tank and reset the trip odometer to zero. I just got back from a 55 mile trip and the fuel gage is still pegged at FULL. I haven't checked my plug readings yet, and the engine is running a little bit warmer now, but all-in-all, I think it worked out nicely.

Go for the K&N stock replacement and let me know how it works out for you.

UNI makes sheets of their air filter foam that can be cut to the size you need. I did that with my 400, which has the same airbox layout as yours, and it works fine. You can get it at many auto and/or motorcycle parts stores.

DDAUM has the same story as mine...in fact I JUST YEATERDAY sold my K&N on eBay because I really didn't want to go into the carbs AGAIN to change the jetting.

Personally, I do not think that the K&N is worth it...you only get a little more preformance out of it. There is plenty of flow through the stock filter.
