Anybody phase/true/weld their own cranks?

OK, I have a dial indicator and some v-blocks...

I have watched a few videos...mostly watercraft related.

Anybody have a link to a good video/how to?

Why shouldn't I try this myself?

Its a big money job, and I don't plan on racing this bike, just occasional, spirited street riding.

I've rebuilt and trued hundreds of single cylinder cranks, once you get the hang of them its easy. I've done a handfull of twins and they are a real bugger. As soon as you get something right you've already knocked something else out. Did one triple, once. I'd rather be shot in the forehead than ever do another.

I can only imagine the horror of doing a four cylinder. All the cranks I did were two strokes, I would imagine multiple piece 4 strokes with one piece rods like a GS1100 are the same.

Now, if you were indeed able to get it trued and indexed and started welding on it, then you need to get it balanced.

Do yourself a favor, send it to Falicon or someone who specializes in cranks. Trust me, you really don't want to try this yourself.

Truing the crank for straightness is one thing, but tweaking the phase orientation is something different. I straightened the crank on my GS1000, but then it was only out of spec by about .002". I'd send it to a pro if it's more than say .005" out of wack, and I wouldn't even try to fix an out of phase situation.

Don't they just run an 18mm rod (gauge) through the con-rods to check for twisting?

Heard nothing but good things about that guy. He would probably be my first choice if I send it out...

Just trying to save a buck or two on an engine that's not going to see a lot of abuse....and I always like to try stuff myself, just to see if I can do it. This seems to be the one "black art" that not many people try themselves though...
