    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Arrrrggghhh. Pinholes in tank. How to fix?

After my 78 1000 stopped running on me a couple of weeks ago, I redid the phos acid trick yesterday and shook gravel around inside. Though it wasn't as dramatic as the last time, I did get more rust from the tank. And some pinhole leaks I counted two, but thought there were a couple more that looked suspicious.

I am looking for the best way to fix these and still get in some riding this year. But with the cold snap here in Utah last week, I don't know if that will happen.

i used fiberglass resin (bondo Brand form advance) prepped the tank w/ acid as you have done then used small amounts of resin, letting it dry for an hour between coats rolling the tank around to achive an even coating.
been running over a year.

Down here in South Africa we have guys repairing auto radiators and fuel tanks. After a small accident with a Yamaha XJ 650 last year, the tank sprang a leak on one of the seams. These guys poured in a rubber-like liquid (after removing the petcock) and let it dry for about a day. Works like a charm.

If you have holes in the tank, that is not good.

I don't know how it will make your cosmetics look, but "JB WELD" is like an epoxy specifically made to hold while gas is in contact with it. It will act as a seal for the holes.

As far as if it will remain smooth, im not sure with the details you provided. (if its under the tank, no worries.)

All of the pinholes are on the bottom of the front left side of the tank.

Cosmetics aren't really an issue. If someone notices some painted JB Weld gobs there, my first question would be "what the hey are you looking for under my tank?"8-[
 
JB Weld is a godsend. I have fixed more random sh!t with it...

Grew up on a farm. The stuff is better than duct tape.

The problem with pinholes, is that they may be an indicator of more serious problems in the future.
 
I've always taken those issues to a rad shop. You get a coating/sealant that is guaranteed forever.
