    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

on a cable operated clutch, there are two? adjustment points, one on the lever (which screws out to tighten) and one right before it goes into the engine/ transmission(also to tighten)

I had a hydraulic one which i never touched on my ducati, however I am going to put in a new clutch on my gs550, and new springs, I already know how to install this thanks to some members of this forum who were so kind to post up the urls to their projects.

The thing that bothers me the most, i dunno why but i want my clutch to disengage from the transmission at a certain point when squeezing the lever back, right now It is engaging / disengaging when the lever is almost an inch away from the handlebar. but I assume that distance will change when i put in the new clutch? right,?

I want to be able to not have the lever adjustment screw all the way screwed out.
I want to be able to just pull on the clutch a little bit, to have it release

When you make your changes, you will need to re-adjust your cable. Start with the adjuster at the handle as compressed as it will go (screwed completely into the holder). Make your major adjustment at the bottom end of the cable. The top adjuster is for fine-tuning it and to compensate for cable "stretch".

You can move your engagement point around a bit, but you want to ensure two things:
1. There is some play in the cable when you are not pulling on the lever. This ensures the clutch is fully engaged (squeezing the discs together).
2. The clutch is fully released (no power transmission) when you squeeze the lever. This will allow proper shifting.

There are THREE adjustment points on the 550 clutch. You need to check the manual for the correct adjustment procedure. Pages 68 & 69 in the Suzuki Factory GS550 Workshop Manual.

Here's a tip that I collected on my little website:

550 clutch adjusts a little differently than the large bikes.

The 550 clutch has three different adjustment points: at the hand lever, at the bottom of the cable where it enters the sprocket cover, and at the actuation helix built into the sprocket cover (under that small cover held on with two screws).

I suggest you fully loosen both the hand lever adjuster and the adjuster at the bottom of the sprocket cover. Use the helix to perform the main adjustment.

Loosen the lock nut on the helix adjuster and turn the flat head screw until you get the feel at the lever you are looking for - cable tightness determines where the clutch engages. Snug down the lock nut afterwards. You might want to leave the cable just a smig loose, and take up the slack with the hand lever adjuster. Very simple adjustment.
