    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Cam bearing caps 1979 GS850

It's been too long since I tore it down to put new gaskets in.(Don't ask. LOL)

Should there be any gap between the cam bearing caps and the cylinder head once they're all tightened down? Can't tell from the pictures in the manual.

Just so you know Eric, those are called dowel pins. I was looking for whatever oil tubes you were referring to till I looked at the list for what #6 was actually called. I KNEW I couldn't remember any kind of oil tubes in the 850 head. Ray.
 
I stand corrected.
As this is a '79 850 head, that will be going onto a '79 1000 cylinder for reasons that someone else will say doesn't work or is detrimental,
you can see that the DOWEL TUBES might want to stay in either piece upon removal.
I suggest that you place BOTH of the DOWEL TUBES into the head BEFORE placing the cap on them to insure that they go where they are supposed to. ;)
Also, make certain that they are installed and that the cap letter matches the one in the head under the camshaft.

Great picture, Eric, and good tip on making sure they are in the HEAD before putting the caps on. :clap: :clap:

A few years ago, I had the 'pleasure' of working on a bike that had broken a cam. Some careful investigation found that a dowel pin must have been in a cap, and had fallen out when the cap was being lowered into place. The dowel pin got caught by a cam lobe, then jammed against the head, shearing the cam. :eek:

If the dowel pins are placed in the head, there is no way for them to fall out when you install the cam caps.
