A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Can I get away with this?

The side stand bolts on my '80 GS 1100L stripped out and the stand partially fell off. After 5 and a half hours I finally got the other bolt out and after a few more hours of trying every bolt in the garage nothing would even get a partial bite in the bolt holes. Tapping out the holes I know is the correct way of doing it however the tap-set I have available to me does not really fit in the space provided. So my question is this....could I just have the side stand welded on? Or does the sidestand need to be removeable when it is time to change the mufflers? I've got professional welders in the family so having a good job done on this is not in question. By the way, it's a stock muffler system on the bike. Thanks for your help in advance-Pete

Re: Can I get away with this?

Ive changed and swapped/replaced exhausts and mufflers on my 750, 1100 and 1150. None of them required the removal of the sidestand to either remove or install an exhaust system. I think you can have the bracket welded on without it being a problem.

if you have welders in the family you probly have a tap that will re tap that hole, if not just go to a auto parts store they sell indivual taps so just find one that will work with the hole you have or the hole you drill for the new tap.

Why not drill the holes out to a large enogh size and weld nuts in the holes.
It worked for me, shame I am building a trike out of it now and don't need eithrt of the stands!

Thanks Earl, one of these days I'm gonna ride down there and buy you a cup of coffee...or beer...or both. I owe you many.

I'll have to take the coffee. I dont get to drink much beer anymore since its always a choice of drink a beer or go for a ride. I average about 1 beer a month, but coffee,............well, thats about 200 cups a day. :-) :-)
