    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Carb hose connection locations?

I need some help with re attaching the carburetor hoses back where they belong. Mainly just the two that originate from in between carb# 1 and 2, and the one between 3 and 4. When I took it all apart I can't remember if they were attached to anything at all which may explain why I couldn't start the engine. Searching as best as I can online, taking a lightly educated guess I think they're supposed to connect to the air box somewhere. However I just don't see connections on there or anywhere else for these hoses to go. :confused:

Further more, this whole process of taking the carbs out and apart has been detrimental to the old ego. Fact of the matter is, I thought I had a pretty good understanding of how a carburetor works. Now that I've been through this I understand less than I thought I did. Does anyone know of a learning tool that explains it all, perhaps a good web animation? And I mean a good explanation that shows everything from the choke action to the forces of suction in all directions and whatever else.

I'm going out on a limb here and guessing you don't have a 450, but beyond that, we're all in the dark.

WHAT BIKE ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT??? :confused:

Cliff's site is a gold mine of info. There is a "Where do these hoses go?" link on there. If that doesn't answer it, we need to know what kind of bike it is before an answer can be given.

You probably do have decent idea how a carb works, it's just that when you open it up and see about 783 different passages and jets, it SEEMS a little more complicated. It's not. Different jets open up as you increase through the RPM range to let more fuel in. Where one jet stops feeding, another starts to open up and pickup where that one left off. In the end it's still just a matter of atomizing fuel and air and feeding it to the cylinders.

It was the vent hoses that had me mostly confused. So these just hang down and vent to outside air?
 
Yep. I draped mine over the air box and back by the swing arm just to keep them tidy.

Some of the smaller bikes have hoops on top of the air box to hold the vent hoses in place under the seat, most of the 850s I have seen just have the hoses draped over the airbox, ending near the battery.

The whole idea is to have them ending in non-turbulent air, so they provide a smooth, constant pressure reference for the carbs.
