A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Carb Rebuild Question

Getting ready to revamp my carbs. I've received the O-ring and Allen bolt kit from cycleorings.com. Has anyone dealt with Z-1 Enterprises, as I thought I'd order their rebuild kits as well. After 19 years of faithful GS650G service I don't mind spending the money for these if they're good. It seems reasonable to go the extra and return the carbs to new condition.

Is the rebuild kit idea a good one or should I stick with what's in the carbs now, doing merely a cleaning and replacement of the O-rings?

Unless something is broken, you don't need 'rebuild' kits.

Rebuild kits provide brass pieces that might be of questionable quality, and not nearly enough o-rings. You already have the o-rings, so just get your can of Berryman's carb dip, some spray carb cleaner and get to work.

Depending on how bad the carbs are, you may want to modify the instructions on the can of dip. To help determine how bad the carbs are, determine how long it's been since the bike ran. If it is a barn-find special that has not been run for years, prepare to dip the carbs overnight. That's one carb body (and its jets) per night. Yes, it takes almost a week, but the results are worth it.

You'll probably need some bowl gaskets. Might be a good idea to pick up a couple spare mixture screws as these tend to damage easily. Try to reuse the internal brass parts if possible since rebuild kits sometimes contain parts that are questionable. Z-1 Enterprises is a great source for parts, fast shipping and reasonable prices. I would avoid cycle recycle part-2 as their ability to fulfill orders is questionable.

My float bowl gaskets are the original ones, they are hard as a rock, have been in carb dip for hours twice, and they STILL seal fine.

IMHO- Z1 rocks. but, I wouldn't order a rebuild kit. Maybe gaskets, and get orings (which it sounds like you did) and you are set.

Z1 are brilliant, I posted about them yesterday in the buyer reviews section.

i just cleaned my carbs on my 81 550. all the parts inside were fine, just REAL dirty :D. i replaced the o rings and the intake o rings. everything is like new now. i should have them back on the bike later today.
