    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Clutch adjustment question

I'm having a little issue with the clutch lever on my 78 GS550E. The clutch is fine and doesn't slip or anything, but the lever is another story. As it is right now, the clutch doesn't engage until the lever is more than 3/4 of the way forward. There really isn't much of a friction zone, so it's basically on or off. Basically it feels a little loose.

Would tightening the lever adjuster make a difference, or should I tighten the nut where the cable meets the transmission? I know something's up because on my friends' bikes, the clutch lever is really tight and fluid.
 
The lever end on the handlebars should have about 2mm of play or enough for the lever to rattle in the holder.

If this is not the case you can use the handle bar adjuster to do this. If there is too much then you need to use the clutch case end, but remember to loosen off the handle bar end first.

I tried every combination I could and it's still pretty loose. How far out should I have the adjustment screw on the lever and the case?
 
Have you checked to be sure the cable isn't fraying. An early indication of your cable letting go is a noticeable "snap" when you pull in the clutch. If that's the case replace it with an OEM cable. It's a couple bucks more than aftermarket, but is worth it.

Pulling it in or letting it go? I can't say I've heard any snapping or any similar sounds.

Pulling it in. And it wouldn't be an audible sound. More of a feel. The way it was for my 750 was that the clutch would feel "jerky" as I pulled it in. Fortunately I checked the connection at the handle before it broke. I only had 2 strands left. Unfortunately I cheapied on the first replacement and in less than 3 months it broke.

I don't know if the cables can stretch over time, but that may be a possibility too. I'd say just replace it anyway. That way you can narrow it done to something else if it doesn't fix the problem.

You have any idea where I can get one? I tried bikebandit, but I couldn't find a part #.
