Clutch basket - piano wire

So I need to open up my clutch cover again, it?s still not downshifting properly into 2nd and 1st while running, and cannot shift into neutral while running. I replaced the clutch cable, all the clutch plates and torqued to spec. When running, it shifts easily up through all gears, but not while shifting into 2nd and 1st. I reinstalled the original piano wire on the clutch basket after filing down the grooves that were present on the basket, and I feel the wire may have come loose preventing smooth shifting. Do I even need the piano wire holding those first 2 plates in place? I wonder if it is the gears that are shot, and that maybe clutch isn?t the problem ? What do you guys think?

Thank you Rich for supplying that link! (i was trying to search for this on my phone while stuck in DMV hell, this site doesnt play well on devices.) I am going to reinstall sans wire.

Also be sure you are adjusting it per the service manual
