    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Directionals won't work unless RPM's are High??

Why is it that my directionals won't function properly unless the rpm's are above 1500-2000?? The faster I'm riding the faster they blink? The slower I'm going the slower they blink? Does this suggest some kind of electrical issue??

:confused: Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

It has been my experience that this phenomenon may be directly tied to the charging system.

I know I have had this experience before but do not recall what the fix was. I beieve I had this expereince when I had a poor performing stator or RR. I may have also had this experience when I put a vetter fairing on my bike but do not recall.
 
My guess is also related to the charging system. Most blinkers will not work if the voltage is too low. Check your system with a volt meter at various engine speeds. At anything above a fast idle, it should be over 13 volts, maxing out somewhere around 14.

Also check the condition of your battery. Make sure that it has water in it. Use distilled water if it is low. Give it a slow charge overnight, check the voltage about an hour after removing the charger. Should be 12.5-13.0 volts. Check the voltage while cranking the bike. Should not be less than 10 volts. If it is low, it is probably time for a new battery. If a new battery is in order, consider spending a few bucks more for a sealed battery. Better cranking power and you NEVER have to add water. \\:D/

I've had this problem and it was a grounding issue. But it only did it to one side.
 
I had a similar problem and thought it was electrical also. My signals blinked very intermittently and very fast at higher rev's. I went over the charging system with a fine toothed comb, found nothing amiss.

It NEVER happened when the bike was stationary, only when moving, even of I revved the engine to 6000.

The solution turned out to be a new electronic blinker unit (about 8 bucks) and remounting it so it was vibration isolated.

The test I used to nail it down was simple. I took the old blinker off it's mount, wrapped it it some chair stuffing (light foam rubber would do, i betcha), and left as loosely set behind the side cover as posssible. The problem went away right there.


Replace your blinker unit, and I am pretty sure that it is sticking (or maybe you are not drawing enough current - have you replaced any bulbs recently?) If you do the isolation/foam rubber test, my guess is that your signals would now never blink.

It's an easy test.
 
DO you have a volt meter? Check to see if your voltage is dropping low (near 12v or less) at low rpm.

if you have an original blinker that is just hanging or a car blinker that is hanging, they can get wet. I vote that there is a real chance that you have a charging system issue. However, it is POSSIBLE that you just got water inside it. the old thermal style will get wet and not be able to heat up. Try tipping it upside down (connections down) to drain the water.
 
I reread your post & realized your signals do work when going slow, they just blink slowly. So amend the end of my last post to "your signals will always blink slowly".

As the other people noted, electrical is the most likely culprit. 1500-2000 RPM is when the alternator runs up enough current to raise the system voltage over 12 to (hopefully) 13 or 14V.
