i am trying to find an oil filter for my bike, i want to do an oil change today. is there anyone that sells the oil filters for the 1978 suzuki gs550 that isnt online so i can pick one up today

Local Suzuki motorcycle dealership? Local motorcycle accessory store? Fram makes a filter that fits GS bikes, Napa sells Wix (who also make one) although you may have to order it.

thank you very much, called a powersports store a couple towns over and they have one for 8.95 ,not waiting for internet anymore lol

Adavanced Auto Parts has the Fram. I have bought two there so far.

i found a place that has hiflo brand and got one, ever since i did the oil change, i am getting better mpgs and i am not burning oil anymore, my question if you wait to long will the used oil filter cause higher oil pressure in the crank and cause it to burn oil.

I imagine you may possibly be able to get it dirty to the point where the flow gets restricted, but I've never seen or heard of it. I would also think that as the filter restricts particles that over the course of time it will get smaller and smaller particles until it no longer can allow anything to pass,
theoretically at least.
Anyway, I don't know why your getting better mpg's and not burning oil by just changing an oil filter.
I'm going to start changing my oil filters every other oil change. I can at least drain the cavity the oil filter sits in, I have a drain plug on my 1000 oil filter cap, and I can loosen the cap till it drains on my 1100. I can do this with confidence as I generally change oil more frequently than I should and the oil really doesn't have much color to it (dirty).
But if there's any doubt about changing it as opposed to not changing it,
err on the side of changing it, oil filters play too important a role in keeping the wear down on your engine.

i dont know what to say, but after the oil change there isnt more smoke out the tail pipe, i havent lost any oil and i have gotten more mpg, i dont know how much but i have put a good amout of miles on and it has more gas then normal, the guy that works on bikes like mine and he says when the filters get old and dirty they cause the bike to burn oil, he suggested a different oil and a filter change and the bike runs great, no oil burn and greater mpgs, no explanation available but its happened

My local Suzuki dealership usually carries 2 or 3 in stock, I also usually get 2 or 3 at a time and keep em in my shed, so I always have an extra on hand (sometimes the dealer has weird hours)

If you have a lot of miles (i.e. somewhat worn rings and some blow-by going on inside your cylinders) your oil will actually thin down due to gas mixing with the oil, this thinner oil won't get "scraped" down as effectively with your oil control rings, and will enter your combustion chambers. Thus you will be burning oil and smoking, etc. since you changed your oil and filter, your oil is now the correct viscosity and is actually working the way it's supposed to. You should change your oil more often, especially on higher mileage engines.

BTW, I change my filter with every oil change... peace of mind and filters are cheap!

Hi PC

What lonerider said:clap: Also adding to the ''thinning'' of the oil the lubricating component of the oil is broken down in its normal function. This too leads to the oil showing a higher propensity to be passed beyond the rings into the combustion chamber and burnt.

+1 for changing oil + filter

Hope this helps

Richard

Unless you're in BFE as stated napa and advanced has these filters. I have used them both and physically the look the same to me. I found a local shop that carries hiflow at the same price and have been using those since only because he is closer.
