A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Dyna S DS3-2 not for my bike?

Guys,

After having the bike garaged for the last 3 months (best riding weather in Miami, of course) because of intermittent electrical issues, I finally got the funds together to upgrade the whole ignition to Dyna.

Problem is, I think I might have screwed up: I thought that all 1982 bikes had the mechanical advance with electronic ignition (I even looked but thought the advance was behind the plate) and even the Dyna page and other websites said to order the DS3-2 for my bike.

Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but there is no mechanical advance here, right?

Now what, adapt the mechanical advance from an older bike? Is it a straight bolt on?
I want the old ignitor GONE!

The advancer from another bike is a straight bolt-on as far as I know.

Yeah, some bikes had mech adv. through 83, others started converting earlier. Which is, I think, why Dyna says to 81 in the description of bikes to accept the DS3-2. The 82 550 (still 8V) will take a DS3-2, but 83-86 (16V) will not.

The retrofit of the advancer is definitely something to search on in the forum. It's been done, but I thought I saw on some models where there are only specific other models which will interchange. Also note that the advance range is much narrower with the mechanical advance.

Will keep researching the retrofit situation, looks like the only way out.

Just a quick FYI for future searchers: I did the retrofit with an advancer from a 850G, part number 33120-45110.
It's a straight bolt on and the Dyna DS3-2 is working perfectly with it. My electrical issues appear to be gone!
