ok so i have a wiring problem with an 82 GS450T(go figure)
i have some wires that i found coming out of the ignitor that werent connected thus my starting and charging problems...the reason i just dont connect them back is because the colors on the not so factory wiring dont match up after the connectors(thank the previous owner) but as it stands the 3 wires coming out of the ignitor are black/red, black/yellow, and yellow....but the only other three wires i have to choose from are green/white, orange/white, and brown....i know the orange/white go to the positive on the coils but i have no idea which to connect to which wires...please help

ignitor wires will not affect your charging system. The stator pages are required to diagnose charging. Are you sure those wire are not just spares? :-$

What is the problem you're having starting/charging the bike? Seems like you've been running it. If wires are clipped, that might be due to an aftermarket ignition or adapting another model of ignitor to your bike.

You still have my number?

I'm still just up the road from you. Not too much to do in the evenings. :-\\\

.

ok there was a problem with the bike a few days ago where the battery had died so i had to push start the bike to get home...while driving, when using the blinker the bike would backfire if i was using the throttle at the same time.....so earlier today i starting diagnosing the problem...when i unraveled some of the "aftermarket" wiring i found the wires mentioned earlier had come upart...i might have done this im not sure but i know the ignitor is def. not stock b/c the wires were spliced into the new ignitor but the colors were different.so if someone could give me an idea of how the layout of the clip that is plugged into the ignitor it would be a big help

and yes steve i still have your number i was going to see if you wanted to meet up at the mardi gras in lake wales on sat( providing my bike is fixed by this weekend) they usuall have a bike show there as well!

Are we looking at the igniter or the regulator/stator circuit ???

You were backfiring because the battery was dying and the spark was weak.
If you didn't disconnect the wires and it ran before/ fix the charging system, charge the battery and ride.

im not sure to be exact....im sure the wires were connected before but while goin through the bike i think i disconnected them but that also might be a dif problem from what im having as far as the charging problem goes.

Thanks, but I am likely going to go to Delray Beach to have some garlic ice cream.
(look near the bottom of the list, just above the beverages :-\\\ )

If you need help getting your bike going, call me any evening after 6.

Hope Steve was able to get you fixed up. If not, post the #'s off the ignitor so somebody can figure out what model it did come off of.

Of course you only have 3 disconnected wires. The orange/white is +12V for the coils, so should be easy to find which one goes with that using a voltmeter. Guess the other two would be the grounds to the coils? Only two ways left to hook 'em up once the +12V is straightened out. Where do the wiring diagrams say the wires are going?

ok so through a trial and error episode i got the wires figured out and she runs......kinda. still have a problem with the charging though....the bike wont start unless push started and even then when using the turn signal the indicator lights and head lights dim:( help

Hi Mr. adam89,

If you need links to the Stator Papers and such, here's an excerpt from your mega-welcome.....

Perhaps you've already seen these, but I like to remind all the new members. In addition to the carb rebuild series, I recommend visiting the In The Garage section via the GSR Homepage and check out the Stator Papers. There's also a lot of great information in the Old Q&A section. I have some documentation on my little BikeCliff website to help get you familiar with doing routine maintenance tasks (note that it is 850G-specific but many tasks are common to all GS bikes). Other "user contributed" informational sites include those of Mr. bwringer, Mr. tfb and Mr. robertbarr. And if your bike uses shims for valve adjustments, send an email to Mr. Steve requesting a copy of his Excel spreadsheet that helps you keep track of clearances, shim sizes and other service work.

The Stator Papers will help you diagnose your charging system. Start with a known, good, fully charged battery then go through the tests to see if you have a bad stator or regulator/rectifier. First, it's a good idea to clean every electrical connection and ground on the entire bike, from headlight bucket to tail light including the fusebox. Run the ground wire from your regulator/rectifier directly to the negative terminal of the battery. This will correct the insufficient ground to the battery box that is standard on most of the GS models. Keep us informed.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff
