when i got my 78 gs1000 the stock air box was gone . i have put new rings in and emgo air filters on and cleaned and cleaned the carbs . my question is to get it to run right will i have to but bigger jets in the carbs or is there a way to ajust the carbs? right now it idles real good but on take off i have to slip the clutch or it will die. if i put the choke on it runs a litte better but still not right.

take the emgo pods off, you'll have a hard time getting it to run right with them. K&N flow much better and won't cause a rich problem at higher rpms. sounds like you're running a little lean, check the spark plugs. I think the best thing to do would be to get a jet kit, it's the easiest way to get it running right, and you'll get the most power out of the individual pod modification.

With any of the pods you will have to rejet

Yep, with any pods you will need to rejet or the bike won't run. It will be ultra-lean and cause your engine to blow up if you run it that way.

Rejet Rejet Rejet!

ok rejet. but whet size 105? it has 95 in now. will i have to raise the jet needle or lower it? thanks for all the help

With only the addition of pods and still using the stock 4 into 2 exhaust, I would increase jets two steps to 100. If you have an aftermarket 4 into 1 exhaust, 105 should be about right.

For just Emgo's, try 110 mains, needle jet e-clip in the bottom (5th)position or bottom position with a .022" jetting spacer on top the e-clip (equal to 4 1/2 position), turn the pilot fuel screws underneath out an additional 1/2 turn, adjust the side air screws for highest idle and re-set to 1,100 rpm's, remove the two floatbowl vent lines and leave the nipples open, bench synch the carbs and follow this with a vacuum synch. Before synching, the spark advance timing must be correct and the valve clearances should be correct.
Test/get plug reads for the main at full throttle, test the needle at 1/3 throttle, and test the pilot at the minimum throttle opening while cruising in 4th gear, say 35 mph.

thanks for the info i'll be getting the bigger main jets soon. i'll let you know how things turn out thanks again i can't wait to take it on a long ride

well guys i got the bigger jets and it's running a lots better but it still falls on it's nose on take off do you think i should turn the gas piolet srcew out more i have it turned out 1 3/4 turn now?

Did you Raise your needles too?

If not that will cause it to fall on it's face and not get enough power.

yeah i put the clip on the bottom spot it has two nylon washers a thin one on the bottom and a thick one on top does any one think that i should put the thick one on the bottom so it will rise the needle more?

2 positions richer should be enough, maybe too rich. Don't reverse the plastic spacers.
You have to take plug reads after running a couple miles at 1/3 throttle to see what the needle circuit is doing. Chop the bike off and read. These VM carbs MUST be vacuum synched after moving the needles to get accurate reads and good performance. Very important. It may well be the reason the bike is having trouble off the line.
1 3/4 turns out on the pilot fuel screws (underneath) seems just a bit rich for just the Emgo filters. Try 1 1/2.
Did you adjust the side air screws for highest rpm's?? This would also cause your problem. They generally end up around 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 turns out.

On my '77 GS750 I went from 102.5 mains to 130, raised the needles 2 notches, and bumped my pilot jets from 115 to 117.5. I have emgo pods, and a Vance & Hines Megaphone 4-1 exhaust setup. It isn't totally dialed in (I think it is a touch rich on the main jets) but it is a good baseline.
