Exhaust sound difference Fix?

I have an 83 GS650GL and my exhaust sounds deep and clean and real throat'y ... But my brothers 82 GS650GLZ sounds super tin'y it sounds like a mix between a 4 stroke and 2 stroke... it actually sounds pretty horrible.

We have the exact same exhaust pipes. I just don't understand why mine sounds so good and his sounds so horrible.

What can we do to make his exhaust sound like mine?
Repack? is that even possible? un-pack? or soak them in some sort of solution? maybe carbon build up? I am not sure where to start.

Check the end of the muffler, if there are bolts on the end-face of it, you can remove the bolts, remove the inner core of the mufflers, and repack the baffle material. Be prepared to have a bolt or three break on you unless you hit them with some decent penetrating fluid and let them sit overnight.

It is also possible that the inner core of the mufflers have been modified/rusted out/replaced/cut off, and that will drastically affect the tone coming out of them. If all is in order, then repacking them may give the results you are looking for.

For repacking, I used stainless steel wool as baffle material. Some people use regular steel wool, or the fancy glaspack material. I have even seen bikes where the owner had used woven fiberglass mat. (that one kinda smelled funny, maybe not related)

In my case, I wrapped the inner core of the muffler with a few wraps of the stainless wool until it reached a medium density, and wound a few coils of stainless mig wire over it to hold the stainless steel wool in place. I then reinstalled them into the muffler. It made the tone of the exhaust much lower and quite a bit quieter too. Just be careful to not put too much in, or wrap it so tight as to significantly restrict exhaust flow as this could cause all manner of other problems.

Maybe if you posted a pic of the mufflers, we could tell you for sure wether or not they can be repacked.

They are the stock Suzuki gs650 mufflers my ends are drilled out where the holes are. I noticed his were not. we drilled his out and noticed a significant difference. but it is super loud now. I figured we might have to get new mufflers anyways since mine started to make a rattle noise. one of the pipes inside of the mufflers disconnected itself. do you know if the back side of the muffler comes out or not? there are no bolts or anything really holding the pieces on. I will go take pictures for reference.

suzuki made some nice but cost effective mufflers.
the ends are likely simply rolled to hold the end cap

the baffle pipes inside are spot welded witht eh welds being on the sides not visible or least visible to the world.

if aftermarket is not a way to go you can the can and extricate the whole muffler internals for a rebuild

of course you will need to know a friendly welder.

I can weld. and have a welder so that being said I think I will have to break the welds and fold the rolled back side in two spots and take out the baffle and see if I can roll everything back? I will go get the pictures now.

oh man that would be sweet
i did a buthcer job on my originals just to test the theory.

I think if you can use a hole saw to cit the disc at the end of the exhaust and then weld it back it would look a lot cleaner and not leave a lot of dechromed viewable surface area.

at least your packing material may still be in there
mine blew out of these at highway spped and nearly sacred me todeath in doing so.
