A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Final Stages of Valve Clearance Check

Ok, so I am in the final stages of my first valve clearance check. valve clearances are within spec now.

Here are a couple of questions.

1. Old valve cover is OLD. A little dry looking but intact. Should I just use it and save my new one for the next inspection?

2. Do you coat the valve cover gasket with anything?

3. My half moons are all fine, but loose. Did I read somewhere where you coat the edges with a liquid gasket and then just pop them back in?

4. I am guessing, as far as tightening the bolts on the valve cover, I just start at the center, and criss cross back and forth working my way to the outside?

Any other pointers?

Thank you so much!!!!

Rick

1. No, use the new one. Scrape ALL the old one off, maybe even lightly sand.
2. Light coat of high temp grease. That will make it so you can probably reuse this one next time, also hold it in place.
3. That's what I did, used some ultra grey. That being said, mine still weep a bit. I'm going to replace them next adjustment.
4. Don't think it matters too much. You aren't torquing them tight enough to bend anything, but I got them all just seated, them worked around getting them all fairly tight, then worked around and torqued to spec.

I would hate to tell you to use the old gasket and then have it start leaking. But it has been done before, if the gasket is still viable.

I sprayed my paper gaskets with WD40. Some like to use grease. Now I use Real Gaskets with nothing on them.

Sure, if they don't leak, go ahead and reuse them. A little gasket sealer won't hurt a bit. I don't use gasket sealer on the top of the half moons because of the Real Gasket.

That's the factory-recommended method, start in the middle and work your way out. I usually don't tighten them all the way up the first time through. Then I go back and snug them up to spec the second time through.

Any other pointers?
Lot's of iced tea!

Thank you for your indulgence,

Also for the half moons, teflon tape works fantastic, and you wont have any gasket maker goop all over the place when you pull them out the next time. Somewhere, there is a place or someone or something that sells those half moons in ALUMINUM! I wish i could remember where i saw that...i want some..

How do you teflon tape them? Just wrap around a couple of times and stuff em in?

I got a pair of them off Ebay. Saving them for the 1000g transplant. As I remember they came from over seas

Gaskets, if it didn't leak before it probably won't leak now. If it does, you only waste about two minutes removing the bolts a second time... Better to re use it than damage the head trying to scrape it off. Grease it.

Bolts, very easy to strip them out, only takes a tiny amount of force to secure them. Finger tight plus a 1/4 turn or so? A torque wrench here can break things.
Too tight will also distort the cover and cause leaks.

You dont want the tape on the top side of the plug, as you want the gasket to seal that. Just one or two layers on the round side. Ive used it now a couple times on some weepy half moons untill i could pick up a new set or what not. And actually, on the cafe, i had used it on one of the plugs with the INTENTION of picking up a new set, and just never did. Hasnt leaked a drop since.
