A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I've worked on my 78 GS550 for a couple of months now and I can finally say its running now!
I replaced the ignition coils, checked my valve clearance, new shims, new spark plugs, swapped out for a dyna, rebuilt my carbs (disassembled and soaked in chem dip for 24 hours, new O-rings, gaskets). And all 4 pipes are getting hot.. FINALLY!
My question now is should I sync the carbs if its running good? My other question is it idles good and I took it for a ride and it cruises fine until start to accelerate and try to get up to speed then it starts to act like its getting starved of fuel. How do I go about getting the fuel mixture just right? Keep in mind I followed basscliffs instructions on the VM carb rebuild and set the fuel screws out 1 turn after seating it and the air screw 1 and 1/4 turn.

Thanks!

Try running petcock on PR to see if fuel starvation weakens when you accelerate ....stock airbox stuff or?
yes sync them...did you at least bench sync them?

Your progress is good!

Yes, stock airbox and stock exhaust. Yes I bench synced them the best I could. Thank you!

Test your petcock flow
Are you using a fuel filter?
The mixture screws are for idle only and should be fuel -3/4 turn and air 1 1/2 turn to start, then tune with high idle method
Yes, you should sync the carbs
What RPM are you revving it t

I also replaced the petcock and yes I am using a fuel filter. I'm not sure what RPM's I am reving at because my bike did not come with a tachometer.

What filter are you using? Many problems happen when an automotive-type filter is used. The problem is that they are too restrictive. Since they are intended for a vehicle with a pressurized fuel system, it's not a problem, but with our gravity-powered systems, they simply can not flow enough.

Your new petcock already has a filter. If you really insist on adding another one, get one for a lawn tractor.
