I've fitted a realy free flowing stainless steel exhaust and pod filters to my 1982 GSX750 S1 Katana.Ive upped the main jet from 112.5 to 122.5 and the bottom end is ok and it seams to pull all the way to the redline but I'm having problems with mid range. it's stuttering quite a bit.
Should I change the needle by lowering it and richening the mid range?

If it's the mid range, change the needle height. I'd do a plug chop read where the engine is stuttering to see if it's lean or rich. Did you change the needles as well? Drill out the slides?

I have not changed the needle position yet. I was under the impression that the engine was sputtering due to lack of fuel. I didnt feel like it was wet and rich. I live in the City so a plug chop coulkd be a problem.

The needles have adjustment notches on them so by raising the clip I will drop the needle ...Right? or do I also have to adjust the slide?

You most likely need to richen the needle by going down a notch on the needle.

I had the same problem with my '82 1100E after the same mods. It took a Dynojet stage III kit to solve.

Thanks for that

Ive raised the needles and the mid range is sorted.

I now have a promblem on 1\8 to 1\4 throttle. when I pull away or try to cruise at this throttle setting. Feels like a fuel starvation problem.

Do you think this is a result of lowering the fuel height in the float bowls, which I did when I was fitting the main jets.

If I raise the fuel level by dropping the float height (bench setting up side down) back to 22.5mm I currently have them set at about 23.5 will this improve my 1/8 to 1\4 throttle response?

I would set the floats to the height your repair manual specifies and leave them there. That probably won't cure the off-idle problem but it will make sure you don't suck the gas out of the carbs when you whack the throttle wide open.
It sounds like you're having issues with your idle circuit. Do you also have problems with backfiring on trailing throttle? If so that would also tend to indicate idle circuit issues. You're idle mix is probably too lean. Try turning the idle mix screws (located at the top of the carbs) counterclockwise 1/2 a turn at a time and see if that sorts things out. Most bikes like around 2 1/2 turns out with pods/pipe setups. Of course none of these adjustments will matter if your carbs aren't synchronized and properly cleaned.

Yes I am get some popping from the exhaust on over run. The carbs have been thoroughly cleaned and bench synchronised. The mixture screws are currently set at 2 1/2 turns out.

I'll try resetting the float heights and adjusting the mixture screws tommorow.

If you can't get the idle mix screws right, try bumping up 2.5 on your pilot jet. I run pods and a 4-1 Kerker exhaust and run a richer pilot jet then stock.

Having had time to think about it I have decided to order a stage 3 dyno jet kit and reduce the variables. I'll post my progress.

You cant adjust mixtures if every carb is running at a different vacuum.
Bench synching is only to be able to start the engine so you can actually snych the carbs with vacuum guages.

Good man, you'll be glad you did. I run a stage 3 and still bumped the pilot up.

You sure your electrical system is healthy? I had a sputtering at take off this weekend, was carbon fouling the plugs big time. Some of my electrical connectors were burnt, slightly starving the coils for spark at idle and just at take off.

The last set up I had was a high performance 4-1 with pod filters and I ran a DJ stage III kit, kept the pilot at 145 and dropped the air jet to a 160. Larger pilots don't come with the DJ kit.

The DJ stage III jet kit is important, glad you are going with it. With a bigger main jet, the air vent in the bottom of the slides should also be drilled out to a larger hole (5/32" maybe??) to allow them to equalize the venturi effect properly. The proper size drill bit comes with the jet kit.

Make sure your fuel line is flowing real good, and the petcock isn't blocked. Also lube your advance unit on the right end of the crank.

Thanks for the tips guys. I'll post my progress after fitting the kit. I'll check the advance unit aswell. Its a new petcock so feul delivery to the carbs should be sweet.

You know what? I followed all of that and understood absolutly NONE of that! lol!

You probably just need to pick your needle up and go up in size on your pilot jet. The needle lift will more than likely fix your problem.
