    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Fuel line and filter question

OK, just finished up rebuilding the carbs on my stock 83 GS1100E........the bike starts fine, but it seems to being "starving" for gas, will run for a while, but then dies. Tend to bog when I try to give it any gas. Couple of times it revved up, but eventually would die when the choke came off. I think I know the answer to the question, but will ask it anyway. I put a fuel filter right in the middle of my gas line, just because I wasn't sure about the condition of the tank, and it seems to me this thing is starving for gas. Is this fuel filter a bad idea? I used to run one on an old KZ1000 with no problem, but it has smoothbores, if that makes any difference. Seems to me I read something about "gravity feed" on these carbs, is this my problem? If I can't run a filter there, what are my other options? Depend on the filter in the tank/petcock and cross my fingers? If so, I think a tank cleansing will be in order, after going through these carbs completely, I don't think I want to do it again!!!!!
 
Clean the tank and remove the fuel filter. Your carbs need a 5/16 line flow from petcock to carb T. If you don't you will get fuel starvation. If you really need a fuel filter make sure it has 5/16 flow capabilities. Put a funnel with gas on the fuel line without the filter and see how it runs.
 
Use the filter if you think the tank is bad, for sure!! Try the idle adjustment screw,and your air screws...did you go through the carbs 100%?? Replace the o-rings?? Adjust the floats?? Air box on nice and tight?? Intake rubbers have no cracks?? Use the search feature here as well....my problem turned out to be a couple of jets that werent properly cleaned...

Hmmmmmm. It might even be easier than that. I just took off the tank, and turned the petcock to all three positions, and no fuel is coming out?? Guess it would be starving for gas!!! :shock: Oh well, maybe it will be an easy fix, I just "eyeballed" the inside of the tank when I got the bike, and it didn't look too bad, but obviously, there's something going on with the petcock, so that will be my next project. One question though, I searched on eBay and found another petcock, it seems to have two outlets coming from it, unless I'm just totally blind? What's the second one for???

These petcocks will not flow gas unless there is vacuum applied first. My prime is even vacuum activated but doesn't require constant vacuum.

I have an 80 gs 1000.Do you know a source for the o rings?

If you have an OEM petcock then it should not require a vacuum for fuel to flow in Prime position. The lever in Prime postion mechanically pushes the diaphram open to allow fuel to flow. If yours does not function as described I'm betting the small spring steel plunger was damaged when the petcock was disassembled/or rebuilt. Been there and got the T-shirt.

The smaller diameter outlet is for your vacuum line and the larger is for a 5/16" fuel line. The vacuum line connects to a port on the engine side of the #2 intake manifold.

Also, if you use an auxillary fuel source then you'll need to plug the vacuum port on the engine or you may hole a piston from an extreme lean condition on #2.

On my pos 80 petcock I have to prime the prime with vacuum. Sorry for the misunderstanding.
