Alright so I found my buddy a project bike GS750 that caught on fire from the cabs flooding and the valves and timing being out of adjustment and backfiring. We're doing a thorough rebuild of it, and I wanted him to buy a new Suzuki petcock since the old one was probably damaged after a minor carb fire, and also wanted to get new needles and seats.
I had thought that I had purchased the genuine Mikuni stuff before for about $20-23 each for a needle and seat set, but now all the online places are telling me a 1st gen GS750/850/1000 needle and seat set for ONE carb is $32. Z1 sells some sets for $6, and jetsrus.com sell some sets for $16.
Has anyone had any good long term experience with using the cheaper ones? I have gone to a fairly strict policy anymore for most parts other than Shindengen SH775 regulator-rectifiers, tires, cosmetics, and AllBalls bearings and seals, of using almost all OEM parts. Bad experiences with some aftermarket parts.
Anyone care to chime in? Trying to get my friend's bike built rock solid and dead reliable, as he is not as mechanically or motivationally inclined on wrenching as myself. Good practice as well, as I hate replacing parts that I have already replaced in the recent past due to failure. Original parts on my truck or motorcycle last 30-35 years, and then replacements last 1-5 years... no good.
