    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Getting frustrated with carbs...

Hi,

New to the forum but i've been reading for some time as i've had a GS for a few years now. I'm hoping someone can help me with my problem, i'm sure it may be somewhere on the forum but i've not been able to find it and i've just getting frustrated.

Started working on my 1982 Suzuki GS750EZ for the first time in a couple years, its been in storage. Started it up after a couple new parts and a relitavly minor amount of work. Initially it started fine but then gas started pouring out of the #3 cylinder. I pulled the drain plug on the carb and tapped on the bowl a bit. Used a little deep creep and some compressed air. I also discovered the petcock was draining fuel in the on position so I took it apart and cleaned it. The petcock now no longer leaks in the on position.

I started the bike again and tapped on the bowl as it was running, all of a sudden it belched smoke and gas started draining out of the airbox. I was aware that this was a possibility beforehand after reading this forum and knew immediately what had happened. I drained the oil/gas and put in fresh. I then pulled off the carbs and took apart the bowls and cleaned the float/pin/bowl/et I then reinstalled the carbs and primed them. They seem to be getting fuel to them as having it in the prime position filled the bowls. I also pulled the spark plugs and spun the engine to purge any gas that might still be in the cylinders. Now the problem I am having is that nothing is happening. I push start and the engine just spins, does not even begin to fire.
I know it is getting spark. The engine won't even fire with starting fluid. Any suggestions?

Just one.

Now that you have some practice removing and reinstalling the carbs, do it one more time, but CLEAN THEM PROPERLY THIS TIME.

You say you have been reading the forums for some time. Have you never seen any of the posts that say "it hasn't been run for xxx amount of time, now it won't run at all"?

Seriously, take the carbs apart, strip them down according to the page found in the Garage section on the home page or on BassCliff's site, dip them in Berryman's Carb Cleaner dip for a day each, re-assemble using new o-rings from cycleorings.com. Virtually EVERY DAY, there is another post about "won't run" that is due to dirty carbs.

Now that you have experienced it for yourself, you will soon be preaching the "CLEAN YOUR CARBS" gospel, so go get your "dip" and your o-rings.

Sorry... thats what i'll do then. I just thought it was interesting that I although I was having problems before it wasn't this problem that I was having, the bike would start immediately. I naively thought that cleaning the bowls wouldn't cause new problems, evidently I must be wrong.
 
It's not the bowls that are the problem.

There are tiny little passages in the carb body that can only be cleaned by soaking overnight in "the dip".

OK, there is an alternative method if you happen to have an ultrasonic cleaner handy, but not many of us do (yet). :o

Ditto to everything that has been said about cleaning the carbs properly. You'll be amazed at the difference in the way they will perform.

Steve was just saying you've overlooked the obvious

Two things are mandatory - the valve adjustment and the full carb cleaning - to reviving an engine, even one that runs

Go see BassCliffs site - he has a list of things you must do

Otherwise, you end up with these "interesting" problems
