A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Would someone with a 1980 GS1000G, tak a look in your manual and tell me what the Rake and Trail numbers are for this bike.

I had a 80 model GS1000G and it steered much quicker than my current 82 GS1100GK. I have removed the fairing and bags, so the wieght should be nearly the same.

It could be just my perception, but I don't think so!

The GK probably has a bigger front tire that would account for some of it
GS1000G steering head 27.5 deg

Thanks Lynn

It appears that the steering head angle is really close. (27.5 to 27.84)

The front wheels are different widths (1.85X19 on the 1000 and 2.15X19 on the 1100) but I ran a 110/90X19 on my old 1000 and run the same on my 1100.

The biggest difference I found is the rear wheel and tire. On my 1000, I ran a 130/90X17, and the 1100 runs a 130/90X16.

The 1100 runs a shorter shock than the 1000. (12.5" versus 13")

That puts the rear of the bike 1 inch lower. Combine that with the slight extra rake, and I believe that explains the sluggish steering. The bike tracks like a train on the highway. It is after all a GS1100GK, and the GS1000G was a Sport Tourer.

I have a 110/90/19 on the front of my 850 It made a noticable difference.
WHen it gets replaced I am going back to the 100
