    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

GS1100 will not go into gear

My friend has got this GS1100,
While going down the road it made a sound like something snapped in it, and now it will not go into gear, just grinding sounds. I thought it was the clutch at first, but the bike will not even go into gear by rocking back and forth when the engine is off. So the clutch should be fine.
I am not sure what the problem could be and would love some insight.
 
Would that be an E model (chain drive) or one of the shaft drive models?
 
It is the shaft drive version. Any way to pinpoint which is the problem without opening up the trans?

First thing to do.
If all looks good, then check the output shaft (is that called a transfer case?) and check that.
If that looks good, you have to pull the engine, flip it over and split the cases.
Hope for #1.
 
Yeah, I really have no clue how it happened, that is the story he told me.
But I will do those checks, and im really hoping I wont need to help him with taking the engine out. Ill keep yall posted. Thanks for the support as always. This forum is just full of great people.
 
rear wheel splines?
put it in gear and it rolls?
let the clutch out in gear and it doesn't move?
i'm local and may have nick knack parts...just depending.
 
blowerbike, what ever it is, it is located at the tranny, not the rear wheel. Clutch, transfer case or internal. Can you help him out with any of those parts?
 
there has been limited information posted unless someone here has spoken with him.
trans just don't break like that.
if he needs clutch area parts then i may have some pieces.
if he needs internal hard parts for the trans or drive line then no.
i do have a GK 3rd member(rear pig) or whatever you shaft guys call it.
 
I agree that transmissions normally do not break like that. The clutch is the most likely suspect. So you do have some parts? I'm thinking he is going to have to pull the clutch basket to assess the damage.
 
yes,
the clutch parts are the same on 80 and later 1000/1100 shaft and chain drive 1100/1150 16v. engines for the most part(1150 basket has 2 more teeth).
 
I know no more about what happened than what he told me. Ill check out the clutch and all later this week.
Blowerbike, ill pm you once I know what the problem is, and hopefully we can get the bike sorted out.

I'm working on one now that had a piece of broken shift fork in the oil pan. The PO said he was just riding along, heard a pop when he shifted into third, rear wheel locked up..yada yada yada.
 
That is why I said "usually". Nothing is impossible, although some things are improbable.
 
On a shaft drive the first thing to check is the secondary gear set. Check the big nut that connects the drive shaft to the engine- inside the Boot on the swing arm the stem sometimes breaks

Thank you. That is what I was calling the transfer case, I just did not know the formal name for it.
