Hey y'all,
It's been a while but I've got some problems. After a carb rebuild and Dynojet stage I upgrade my bike won't run well with varying symptoms. Here's the deal:
83 gs1100 stock everything except a Yosh 4-1 race exhaust and K&N filter in the stock box. It ran quite well with stock carbs but definitely was a bit lean and popped a lot on deceleration after the Yosh was added. It had a valve adjustment just before putting the carbs back in, charges just fine, new plugs and ALL rubber inlet hoses are brand new.

Renobruce dipped and painted my carbs last Spring and ever since putting them back together with ALL new o-rings and the jet kit it won't run right. I've had the carbs out multiple times and double checked all specs:
floats are all at 22.8mm, mixture screws at 2.5 turns out, DJ114 mains and stock everything else (45 pikots) I drilled the slides and the needles are clipped in the third slot from the top. It seems like each bowl is evenly filled with fuel too.

Now it won't idle well or take throttle at all. Before I pulled the carbs last to clean passages/dip jets and triple check everything it idled and drove but barely took throttle until over 4k rpm. Now it will hardly idle. If I put my hand over the airbox inlet, it revs to 2-3k and will take throttle more easily. With the choke on when it's cold, it starts and revs to 5-6k then drops back down. I'm at quite a loss and fear I'm missing something. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Josh

compression?
Ignition? Check spark on all leads
Timing?
Fuel in the bowls? blocked vents or bad petcock?
I really never liked the small mains the Dynojet kits used and installed 122.5 Mikuni but this has nothing to do with you not starting.

Sorry. I didn't mention timing or spark because all seems good although I haven't tested the coils. Like I said the bike ran great beforehand except quite lean with the new 4-1. The petcock works as it should and prime works as well. No leaks. I don't see how the vent tubes could be blocked but will check.

The plugs are showing it's running extremely rich and I assume that's why it revs up when I put my hand over the air inlet? Chef, I saw you mentioned on another thread that Mikuni117.5 mains would be better for this application. I guess that's a bit larger than these DJ 114s I've got in there now?

I ran 117.5s with an airbox with K&N and a Kerker 4-1. I was just starting on the safe side of things.

Your plugs are showing rich because you're using the choke, you're showing lean symptoms.

Plus, you're not even getting to your main jet, so that's not the issue

Try putting your airbox lid back on and see what happens. If putting your hand on the airbox makes it better, the lid should make it even better

I've got the lid on the box and these symptoms are all after the choke has been turned off. All pipes get hot evenly as it warms up too. It just doesn't warm up easily...

Okay

Put the choke on a little bit and see if the symptoms are less

My sources don't show what the stock jets are for a US-model '83 1100E, but the Canadian version is 112.5, and they are usually just a bit richer, so your stock Mikuni jets might have been 110. A 110 Mikuni translates to about a 117 DJ, so, if you are running 114s, you are quite a bit leaner than stock. With your 4-into-1 pipe and K&N filter you should probably be at least 3-5 sizes larger than stock, or the 117.5s that Chef suggested. The DJ equivalent would be 125.
