DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

So, finally got a chance to go in the basement and start with my valve clearance adjustments.. when i bought the bike, it had 43k on the clock.. not sure if the valves have ever been done (no records of it anyway)... so, off i go with my feeler gauges in hand.

all 4 valves, are reading less than .038mm clearance:eek:

so i said to myself "myself... lets take out the shims, and get new ones as appropriate" yeah... forgot i need a tappet-depresser tool to do that.

where can i find such a tool.. for the 450? i can find them for almost every other size, for low $$ too ($30 ish)... help??

Thanks all!

-Nate

The tappet tool is the same for all the GS two valve engines - check Z1 Enterprises or ebay. You can also use tie wraps to do the job. Check basscliff's site for instructions. Oh, and you will have to move those valves down two sizes most likely because there is no clearance.

yeah... JUST found the zip-tie reference... i like that.. i have lots of those :) (go figure, an electrical engineer, has lots of zip-ties.. weird)... I'll get those measurements tonight & then get the parts on order! maybe the bike will be running before snow :)

Thanks for chiming in!

Just remember not to turn the motor without a shim in each bucket. No need to scratch up those cams...

While you are at it, might I suggest another handy tool?

This one will help you keep track of your shims and clearances. Check out the last line of my sig for info. :o

"enter shameless plug here" :P sorry, that's all that popped in my head. I'll be sending you a message... no need to spend the time to re-create the wheel when it's already been done!
