A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Gs550 will only start if caught in gear but misfires

I've got a 1980 gs550. The other day I left a stop light and dug into it, hit neutral and it obviously revved up, when I grabbed the clutch to shift into 2nd, the bike started to die. I shifted up and kept riding, I noticed the bike was misfiring. I pulled over and the bike shut right off. When I went to start it up, it wouldn't start. Checked the fuses, they were all good. I ran with the bike, and caught it in gear, it started and I rode it the 3 blocks to my house, misfiring on the way there. I assume it can't be the ignite or the stater because it did run, that is only an assumption mind you. I'm replacing the plugs tonight (ngk b8es, I dkno yet what the gap should be at). Is it safe to assume that I just killed the plugs on it? Possibly killed a coil? Is there anything else I should consider other than those 2? I thought about the magnetic pickup but the bike is sparking even if it's just barely. And are the coils on them rebuildable or is it a replace only item? Any help is appreciated.

Brand new battery. Prior to it happening the bikes been on the road for like 2 weeks, no start up issues. There's also a brand new regulator rectifier in it. It was riding along just fine until I hit neutral missing 2nd and it revved to like 7k then the misfire and not starting happened.

New battery, new r/r (even a decent one) can't do much if you got stator and connections problems. Charge up battery and do the Quick Test ,cuz it offers clues. Ignitors don't like high or low voltages, so find out.

After you do the charging tests I would consider checking the top end timing. If you saw 7k it probably went a lot more. Maybe you jumped a tooth.
