A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

gs550e CV carb float heights

Hi All

My 1982 gs550ez runs well and goes ok but will not rev past about 7K. It doesnt mifire or misbehave just seems to hit its max revs well below the redline on the tacho.

Whilst i was just trying to diagnose I noticed whilst reving it in nuetral to 7-8k it would hit 7-8k and then 'break down' to 6-7k. I also rigged up a timing light and there seem to be no breakdown of spark when this happened.
Riding it I know its generally a bit on the weak side and occasionally feels like it running out of fuel under load.
Everything is set correctly in terms of valves, ignition, compressions cold are 125psi on each cylinder and plugs are a good colour although 1 shows noticably weaker (im guessing number 2 but I stupidly muddled them up). No air leaks and I replaced the inlet manifolds a couple of years ago and went through the carbs. All standard jetting and airbox.

My specific question, before i take carbs off, do you think theres a good chance low float heights could cause this issue? The attached picture shows the fuel levels for each carb, all levels are below the gasket line.

Any thoughts on this or other ideas on what could be the issue welcome, cheers

I had a very similar symptom on my GS650E, the problem resolved itself after replacing a suspect looking spark plug cap and cleaning up the cable ends by cutting off about 1/4" and replacing all the resistors.

BTW when you start the bike from cold do all the exhaust pipes warm up evenly or do you have one or 2 that are a bit slower than the others, I also had that issue which also was fixed after the work on the spark plug caps and leads.

thanks for the reply. I had ignition woes about a year ago and needed new coils/leads but i didnt change caps. Reminds me I have some new caps somewhere so might dig them out though mine runs on 4 evenly right from cold
