    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

GS550L 18 Tooth front sprocket

Hello everyone,

I am interested in dropping the RPMs on my 1980 GS550L and I would like to make my gears last a bit longer for some highway cruising this year. My brother recommended switching the front 15 tooth stock sprocket with a new 18 tooth front sprocket. Has anyone ever done this before? Will this set up work with the stock rear sprocket and chain for GS550L?

Any feedback would be great.

Hi Dain, your brother is nuts; a three tooth change is too much - first gear would be killer tall plus the engine isn't designed to lug around, it wants to spin. Try one tooth. You will need a longer chain but your current chain may be able to accomidate if the rear wheel is in the middle to rear in the chain adjustment slot on the swingarm.
 
He put an 18 tooth on his GS400 and loves it. What would be the risk of trying the 18 tooth on the GS550L? If its that bad would a 17 tooth be ok to use?
 
I would think that an 18 tooth sprocket would not fit and if you did manage to get it on then it would probably mangle the clutch pushrod.
 
Does anyone know if there is a size chart for front sprockets on a GS550L? I have searched high and low. Would anyone know off the top of their head what the max size would be? 16? 17? is there anyway to measure it? Thanks.
 
The size goes from 13-17t in front and 38-52t in rear.
As a rule, 1 tooth less or more on the front sprocket is the same as 3
teeth less or more on the rear sprocket for the same ratio.
