GS850GL Sputters and pops when engine is not under load

What is not right you ask... My GS850GL sputters and pops (a lot!) when you let off the gas coming to a stop, shifting gears (slowly), going down long hills and sometimes even when cruzing at lower RPMs (3000 ish) doing 30 to 60 mph under light load...under load and at higher speed the thing runs like a champ, has great trottle response and is smooth. If I put the choke partway on, sometimes it runs a little smoother, but it pops no matter what setting its on. I have NEW exhaust gaskets all around, even in the crossover.... any clues anyone?

My pipes are blued near the engine block, which I hadn't noticed before I had the carbs worked on. BUT I have been driving it somewhat spiritedly (mainly to keep the thing from popping so much) Also, it occasionally quits when dropping to idle at a stop, but restarting is easy and then it will idle at about 1100 just fine.


Also despite having replaced and lubricated the speedo and tach cables, the speedo and tach still bounce around a lot, but only intermittantly. Any clues? solutions? does something need lube? Gauge going bad? cables aren't kinked or have any sharp bends.

First check petcock to make sure fuel isn't dribbling down vacuum line and causing #2 cylinder to misfire, which lets raw fuel pass into exhaust and cause popping at low throttle settings. My bike behaved like this when my petcock failed.Rule this out first.

I will check that also. Someone else hinted that someone may have changed the jets, but a more general concensous is that there is an exhaust leak, sucking in cold air and making it pop.

My GS650 started to do the same thing recently, and its been slowly getting worse, so I might have a different issue but, when running under light load and going down hill you would be on the idle/low speed needle. I remember reading somewhere (I will try to find the reference), that this can be caused by a lean-condition on the idle mix screws. You might want to try an richen your mix a 1/8 to 1/4, and see if the condition improves...

what he said most likely cause is your too lean on the pilot circuit richen it up and it will more than likely go away
